Hey, I just thought I'd throw something out there to take your mind off of the gun debate.....

We're one day away from May out here in the desert and I got in another "winter" climb up Owens Peak. Instead of shorts and a tanktop, I had a down jacket and rain shell on.

When I was an elected official I often heard about all the things that would happen when pigs could fly. I guess there’s gonna be a lot of things happening here now.

Richard, here are some weather quotes from the mountaineering literature for you. These two have the mountain-sea connection. Harvey

Mountaineering, like farming, sailing, and all our most interesting activities, is a chancy business ruled largely by the weather.
HW Tilman, Everest 1938 page 502

The mountaineer must climb with his finger on the pulse of the weather…like an experienced seaman he must be able to smell bad weather before it comes.

Yes it appears that always exciting things happening around Mt. Whitney!

Now, I have been studying bacteria and the diseases they cause for the past several months, and just want you all to know that the only thing that "may" kill Giardia is Iodine. Your steripens are a waste of money (and I have one, btw). Don't ask me why unless you are willing to listen to a long explanation.

This being a very heavy snow year, it will be interesting what bacteria, or cysts from bacteria survive.

I have one too. It's highly unfair to write a statement like that without offering at least a simplified explanation. The SteriPEN website links to numerous studies that indicate otherwise.

Please explain. I'm listening.

Quoted from Effects of the Norwegian winter environment on Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts

"Shear forces generated during freeze-thaw cycles are postulated to have disintegrated the parasites exposed to the Norwegian winter and retrospective laboratory studies support this theory. Increased dye inclusion, possibly indicative of viability loss, was also noted. The refrigerated control parasites exhibited no decline in numbers, and alteration in dye inclusion characteristics for refrigerated parasites was slower. Cryptosporidium oocysts were apparently more robust than Giardia cysts; differences between isolates were also noted. These results suggest Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts do not persist in the Norwegian terrestrial environment over winter, and when detected, will have been excreted since the previous winter. Differences in the morphological characteristics, matrix effects, and the possible relationship of the dye data to parasite survival are discussed in relation to further studies."

Dunno, Blooty! There are several of us on here that have been studying the bacteria and diseases for the last several *decades*, and I, for one, would be very interested in such information, that contradicts virtually all water science of the last 50 years. Unfortunately leaving for a week (in the Sierra!), but look forward to this when I return.

I tried to find a nice, juicy piece of research that would reveal all the gory details of a SteriPen gone bad....but I could not find one! For those years working behind the Atomic Analysis Spectrometer, I learned to take pleasure in all the PPMs worth of imperities I could find. I DID find this nice article explaining in layman's terms how the mysterious little SteriPen device works:

It's no secret that a SteriPEN does not kill the little buggers outright. It just gives them the equivalent of little vasectomies by scrambling their DNA so they can't reproduce.

Blooty, several have asked why, but await enlightenment!

This is important information for all, I'd expect! As someone who stands in front of crowds, advocating the device, I'd particularly like to know about not commonly understood problems!

I'm still using my SteriPen as my primary means of purification. If it's worthless I would like to know why.

Actual science
Quote:
This demonstrated that a UV dose at 254 nm resulted in significant inactivation of the Giardia cysts. Up to 2 log (99%) inactivation was observed at a UV dose of approximately 10 mJ cm−2 (range 9.3–11.7 mJ cm−2). Higher UV doses (between 20 and 40 mJ cm−2) resulted in up to 3 log (99.9%) inactivation of the cysts. The actual inactivation at these dose levels could be higher, but for this study the maximum quantifiable limit of cyst inactivation was up to 3 logs (99.9%).

(The SteriPen light source has a wavelength of 254 nm.)
