I'm planning a weeklong trip starting July 3 or 5 to grab Langley, Muir, Whitney, Russell, Tyndall, Williamson, and maybe Barnard. Direction could be reversed to start with Williamson in order to enjoy going up Shepherd Pass.

In general the goal is to take the "easy" or "safe" route up each mountain.

Depends on what days. I'd be interested in a day hike (long one at that) or overnight if the schedule works out. As for dirt, as a youngster we camped in the dirt, no tent, just those old sleeping bags with deer and bears printed on the insides. A big piece of plastic on the ground that pulled up over the bags. Nothing like waking up to the sound of an Elk herd 50 feet away at Golds Bluff beach or shivering all night by the Tetons. They made tents back then didn't they? grin

If you want to "enjoy" going up Shepherd Pass I would suggest making it an overnighter, it's one hell of an approach.

That was definitely a weak joke on my part. Shepherd is fairly legendary on the misery meter. I'm planning on taking a week to hit 6 or 7 peaks.

EDIT: If we go N-S I would probably aim for Anvil camp the first night, then do Williamson and Tyndall the next day and camp nearby. EDIT: Going S-N so I won't hit Tyndall and Williamson until Saturday 7/10.

For those who want to do it in a day check out Bob Pickering's Williamson and Tyndall at age 60 ( in a day)

Ya I was thinking about picking up permits on Friday July 9th and heading up to camp. From there we can try to both the next day or add another day to the trip. If this trip could be done without me taking Friday off it would be even better, but we need to pick up the permit the day before (unless we reserve....does anyone know?)

If we go i'll be doing it without taking Friday off. I don't have any vacation left and need to start acuring vacation time for my Mexico trip in November. As it is I"m calling in sick for a June MR trip and the July group hike...My plan would be to drive up after work sleep at the Hostel. Saturday hike to anvil. Sunday summit Tundall or Willie...Both would be a long, long day....

Jeff,

Hope to see you up there Saturday or Sunday 7/9 or 7/10. We'll probably camp near the pass Friday and Saturday nights, but may move down to Anvil Camp for Saturday.

No really, I'm serious. I saw pics from last weekend looking into the Bowl and it's all filled in right now. Hmmm...

Casey,

Shepards pass is easier if you stay on the trail. (yup, got lost again) and stay off the lakes in the bowl. We floundered around the rocks on the way to Williamson and the snow on Tyndall was a bit deep, but still don't think we could have done Willy and Tyndall in one day (still would have needed a day to hike out). Might want to pick one or stay an extra day.

Thanks Ken. So maybe the best thing to do is to do Tyndall on Saturday July 10th, camp, and then attempt Williamson on Sunday July 11th. What do you guys think? It would be difficult for me to get Friday off.

I went with Skydive last June and it took pretty much a full day leaving from Shepherd's pass early in the AM to tackle Williamson. Granted some of this time was spent wandering around in snow flurries and (trying) to avoid frozen lakes in the bowl, but it takes a while.

I spoke with Ken last night who did Willi last year with SJ47. Considering the length of the approach and the prospect of spending the first night at 12,000 feet, I'm thinking I would rather do one or the other on this trip. My preference would be Willi though. If we did it like that, we could hike up to Anvil Camp on Saturday July 10th, get an alpine start (about midnight) and head up Shepherd's Pass, navigate Williamson Bowl, and shoot for the summit. This would still be an incredibly long day. What do you guys think?
