Hey everyone, I'm so excited that I got my permit to hike Mt. Whitney this year. Unfortunatley it is for the first week of June. I have no experience hiking in snowy conditions. I plan on hiking Mt. Baldy as a pratice run (Which I believe still has snow). Is this too early in the season for a newbe to try and hike to the top? I know the weather changes every year so it's hard to know based on current conditions. I'm just trying to get a feel of what I'm up against. I'm in my early twenties and I have little experience with altitude climbs. I'm in athletic shape. I'm excited for the challenge but I obviously want to go about it safely. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This probably isn't what the more advanced hikers would tell you, but if it was me, I would approach it as a "practice hike". Don't see any reason why you can't make it to Trail Camp and enjoy everything the Portal, Whitney, the trails and the people have to share with you. You can check out how the parking, the camping areas, hiker camping area, etc. and just learn what you need to do the next time you go up. Knowing the trail can really help you the next time. You'll know the steepness, the springs and places to get water, the terrain....and you can take your time and enjoy.

Now, by next time, I mean in a couple of months, possibly as late as late September. So you can keep your goal of making it this year. After Labor day, you should be able to "walk in" any day. Just contact the visitors center for available dates. When I went last year, the second week of October after weeks of beautiful weather, there were 96 available permits.

I've only been up a couple of times and summited once, both last year, so the more experienced hikers will be able to help you out a lot more. Seriously though, get Doug's book, learn all you can about the nature of Mt Whitney and the draw of it. When you hike Mt Whitney, it will be one of the most unique and possibly spiritual experiences you will have. And it will be one you will share with others, your family and someday your kids. Good luck!

I did Baldy yesterday 5/9) via Register Ridge, looping over the top and down via the Ski Hut. There was snow from the summit ridge (Devil's Backbone) until back at the hut, with a few intermittent breaks. The Bowl itself is mostly clear - a few tongues of snow reach up towards the summit.

I'm going up on June 6th for my fist time also. I am expecting snow from Mirror lake up, nothing that you can navigate without crampons though. When you get to the switchbacks to trail crest is where I am guessing we will both have problems. I am taking an educated guess that crampons and ice axe will be needed. I am actually going to rent the crampons and have bought an ice axe... If I use them or not is another question. I am approaching it as safety first, then summit.

Be cautious and remember it is always more dangerous coming down than going up.

Where are you renting your winter gear (crampons, ice axe, helmet)?? I have a group of 10 also going up on 6/4 - 6/6 and we haven't been able to find it at REI or Adventure 16.

Ya I need to know where I can rent the stuff as well. One of my buddies that's going with me is an Eagle Scout and he said his Scout Master has Crampons we can borrow so I hope that works out.

REI Huntington Beach is the only place in SoCal that rents crampons. There is also a place in Lone Pine (http://www.sierraelevation.com/). I think they require you make reservations online. I just went ahead and bought mine at REI and am hiking Whitney this weekend.

We did Baldy Sunday 5/9 via the Ski Hut Baldy Bowl trail. Made the trip without Axe or Crampons but having a Axe would have made it a lot more fun (We are still learning too and preparing for a early June Whitney trip). Trail was pretty well worn and snow was pretty slushy so crampons didn't seem necessary. It has been really windy making certain areas of the hike very cold be prepared with some extra layers. We actually had almost whiteout fog conditions in areas when the day started out totally sunny sunny. Didn't make the official summit but ended up a little west and didn't feel comfortable spending anymore time since we got such a late start. Next time!

I created a trip on Every trail and there are a few photos.

I am renting my gear in Lone Pine. There is a shop called Sierra Elevation (http://www.sierraelevation.com/) where they rent crampons. They don't rent the ice axe or helmet though...Hope that helps
