It's looking like we're going to need a shovel next weekend - or at least be wise to bring one. Any tips on where to get a lightweight shovel?

seems like a good deal and I've seen more expensive ones on Eddie Bauer, Backcountry, Altrec, Moosejaw.

what is needed? a snow shovel for snow, or a more durable shovel for hard pack? makes a big difference.

Give Kastle a call at Elevation in Lone Pine. I'm not sure if she rents the shovels, too.

Thanks everyone.

h_lankford, you make a good point. Looking for something to do the job in an emergency that doesn't weigh 20#. Here at the SoCal beaches there isn't a variety to choose from - heck, can't even find one!

Think I'll give Kastle a call and see what's available for rent.

I like what they have available at Overstock, LumberJack - unlikely I can get it shipped here before Thurs morning, though, when we head out. Thanks for the help!

Hey HB local wink
Try this shovel
Black Diamond Deploy 7

I bought one a couple of months ago and used it snow camping in Little Lakes Valley 2 weeks ago. It worked great for digging and leveling our tent platform. It's durable, compact, easy to carry, and weighs 25 oz.

Martini,

I live Lawndale. There is a Surplus Store in Gardena that sells an aluminum shovel that the head comes off. Here is the website… http://www.majorsurplus.com/ContactUs.aspx

I don’t see this shovel online, but it is in the store. It’s the same colors as the one pictured in this thread. Not sure of the price.

Hope that helps,
John

I ordered it from Backcountry. I've seen it at REI Santa Ana. Call and ask if they have it in stock. I paid $62 + tax and shipping.

John
The handle stays with this one. It slides down into the blade for one compact unit.

The one I saw may have done the same thing. It all stayed together somehow and it weighed practically nothing. I didn't look at the price but I bet it's lower than REI. The link I put up goes to the "contact us" section of the website. I would call and ask for a price and/or how the top functions.

Surplus stores are hit and miss on prices. Some things I get there for a great price, others I pass and get elsewhere cheaper.

Thanks SoCalJohn- called and they have one for $19.95. It's Lifeline Sports Utility Shovel, 1.4 lbs. Going to head over and check it out. I did like the Backcountry one, too, but if this one is as sturdy, why pay the $65?

With this thread in mind, I just picked up a Snow Claw. Not as tough as a proper shovel, but lighter and sufficient for levelling a campsite or digging an emergency shelter.

That Lifeline shovel looks a lot like one I saw in Walmart, I'm pretty sure it's the same one.
