With the possibility of snow Friday night, any hope of the portal pond being fishable this Sunday for Memorial Day weekend?

I think that may depend on whether you have ice ax and crampons and what your skills with them are.

Does anyone know when the lakes along the main trail become fishable? I'm going up in a week and I'm planning on fishing the portals for a day before, but I would love to come back and fish some of the lakes along the trail. I believe you can get golden trout out of Lone Pine, can't you?

To each his (or her) own, but I'm always baffled by fishermen who prefer lake fishing to stream or river fishing. I made an absolute killing in Lone Pine Creek, right there in the Portal campground last year. There are some huge Trout in there! We fished in the Cottonwood lakes area as well, and I had nowhere near as much fun as fishing the streams. This has always been the case for me, but maybe my preference for dry flies has something to do with it. But, as I said, to each..

I make multiple trips every year to stream fish. I love fishing Lone Pine Campground, Tuttle Creek, the highway, and Cottonwood Creek. I might add I’m also very good at it. I come up to the portals more for the relaxation. I went up there last year and was catching trout hand over fist, literally. My daughter broke her pole, so I gave her mine. I just took the string from hers and flipped it out there and reeled them in using my hands…That gets the tourists a little upset. grin Unfortunately I don’t know anywhere to get a golden in a creek in Lone Pine. They are at higher elevations. So in the name of trying to catch this beautiful little fish I will be doing some lake fishing. Stream fishing though is by far my favorite.
