In August, my hiking partner and I will be crossing the Sierra from Giant Forest, exiting at the Portal. We plan to come out on the 28th, and after a night in Lone Pine will need a ride home to Orange County on the 29th (Sunday).

Is this something we would have to arrange in advance, or do you folks suppose there's a good chance we can find a ride at the Portal or in Lone Pine when we need it?

Last year my partner gave a ride to LAX to an Irishman who had just finished the John Muir Trail.

There is a good chance you can get a ride. My wife and I did the
JMT in 2008. We met some guys on the way down from Whitney. We
ended up giving one of them a ride to the bus station in Victorville so he
can catch a bus to SF. On your way down the hill just start talking to
other hikers. We have at other times given other thru hikers a ride
down to Lone Pine for re-supply. I would offer you a ride but we are
exiting in yosemite this year. Good luck and Happy Hiking.

Last time I did the HST, I just kept on hiking into Lone Pine. I decided to take the Portal Road and I can't remember how many ride offers I turned down. It only took another 3 hours. Once you're in LP there are bus connections to the OC.

I wouldn't mind taking a bus, but apparently Greyhound doesn't serve Lone Pine. What is this bus service you guys were using?

I have never personally used this service, just read about it. And the bus doesn't run every day.
