We are hiking Telescope Peak next weekend if anyone is interested. Our plans are to stay in a motel in Trona on Friday night (18th) and drive the next morning to the trailhead (saturday 19th) and just go up and home in the same day.

Sure you wouldn't rather camp at Death Valley? Seriously, if you haven't been to Telescope Pk there are 3 campgrounds on the road up to the trailhead. We camped at Mahogany Flat (8,133') it stays pretty cool up there.

Here is a trip report from our trip up Telescope Pk.
Telescope, Bennett and Roger's Pks

Cheers

Greg

I agree that Trona is not a great place to stay. It's really dismal (apologies to all the Trona-ites out there but you know it's true) and I don't think there are any reasonable options for food there. I don't camp any more so when I did that trip I stayed in Ridgecrest where there are many hotels and restaurants. The next day it was easy to drive to the trailhead, hike Telescope, and drive back to LA. If I did camp I would second the recommendation of Mahogany Flats. I camped there years ago and it was very nice.

Well I guess I won't be staying in Trona. Thanks for the advice guys. I didn't know it was really that bad because I have never been there. I should have known when all I saw in the pictures was dust.

If you stay in Ridgecrest and get on the road by 6:30AM, you should be able to do the peak and get down in a reasonable time.

Trona isn't quite as dire as some make it out to be. There's a new gas station/deli there called the T-Stop. Gas is reasonable, deli is good, rest rooms are clean and spacious. Have also eaten take out several times at the Trailside. I don't think they do breakfast though.

Geeezzzz.... What's wrong with Trona anyhow?? The many times I have done Telescope, I have spent the nite at The Kilns, Thorndike, or Mahagony depending on the road conditions and/or how tired I was. And when done with the hike, top it off with a beer on the patio at Panamint Springs with a fine view of the summit!!!

We ended up staying in Panamint Springs Lodge. Not bad if you aren't afraid of scorpions. Easy walk up. Perfect weather.
