Oh my gosh, I just saw the modified shirt picture and busted up laughing while at work so loud people came over to check on me. Hilarious!

I don't care what they say, this shirt is good luck!

When things turn out badly, we sometimes avoid post analysis to protect the feelings of the survivors. In this case things turned out well, so we might consider discussing some of the traditional and modern concerns. A partial list:
Traditional
1) Was an itinerary left with someone? Who?
2) Was there a requested SAR call time? When?
Modern
3) How do SPOT owners expect their audience to behave when they use their SPOT in an unexpected manner? What rules have they set?
4) How do SPOT owners expect their audience to behave when their SPOT behaves in an unexpected manner? What rules have they set?
5) How do SPOT owners expect their audience to tell the difference, if any between 3)and 4)?

Dale, excellent questions all. If you'll allow me a day or so, I'll answer from my perspective in my TR. But in brief, 1) yes. 2) yes: I have a set time of 1000 no-show or message at work on Monday morning before initiating SAR. 3-5) I honestly can't say I've thought too long and hard about this, taking pains to make sure my SPOT works appropriately. However, I didn't carry my SPOT this past weekend, so it's moot on this trip.

We also tend to forget the "prior" analysis:

If you aren't "benighted" now and again, then you're really not mountaineering.

Take your time.

Actually, I thought 3) and 5) were about not taking your SPOT. Anyway, as a not yet SPOT owner, it would be nice to know what the answers would be if you had carried it.

Wow. I am starting to appreciate my anonymity (I can not even stand to have my picture taken!)

Well, I pretty much missed all this, but would not have been particularly worried. I know Ray and Paul very well as mountaineers, and they are both people I'd share a rope with, anytime. Considering what I know of the conditions up there (it's postholing time of the year), getting caught and slowed is not surprising. Laura was with capable partners, whose adventures I've followed for years.

However, it IS mountaineering, and one can't help worrying when things go past time.

Moosetracks - a satellite phone may be the thing to buy. Then let
the partner carry it. Hah!

I've been threatened with bodily harm after suggesting we get up at 2:00am to hike out and drive home after a tough day in the mtns.

Firing up the stove and making hot water to drink luckily did the trick but not until 3am.

Someone elses pics of the Feather Peak area

Thanks again, everyone. Lacrosse, there was just no way for us to get up that early after the day we had. That and no moon, some wavy terrain through melting out drainages, and finding the trail under the patchy snow around the second Pine Creek Lake helped keep us in our bags until morning.

Paulie was kind enough to make hot water bottles for our sleeping bags, though...

TR is a-brewin...

You should just download Gimp, its free and easier to use the photoshop and since its open source I think it can do some things not even photoshop can... http://www.gimp.org/

yes, that's true.

BUT, if we get accustomed to seeing SPOT-on, then you should be consistent and carry it always. Otherwise we worry, and, we don't want to WORRY about our friends..., and ,,, enough said...

glad you are back, and safe...

There seems to be a certain amount of Monday-Morning-Quarterbacking going on here. Only Laura, Ray and Paul were on the scene and know the conditions on the mountain. Seen from my easy-chair persective, they made the right decisions.

The subjective and objective conditions that result in being be-nighted on a mountain can be complex, and may or may not be the result of "really mountaineering." Sorry, but speaking as one who has been in those situations, I never regarded it as anything strong, brave or heroic.
