Going up Aug. 10 and wondering what is the last place to filter water and how much should I plan on for the round trip to the summit and back to the filter spot?
Thanks

SB 23. May be frozen in the early AM.
Maybe 1.5 to 2 liters dependent upon your metabolism. Just my experience.
Have fun.
Journey well...

Here we go... If you search for "water" as a historic subject on this board, you'll find a lot of information and opinions.
My own answer is that there is a water source near the 23rd switchback above Trail Camp, and I drink my fill there (without filtering) and carry no water to the summit.

My own answer is that there is a water source near the 23rd switchback above Trail Camp, and I drink my fill there (without filtering) and carry no water to the summit. Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.

No filtering required.
As Bob Rockwell told me on 06-12-10 before our Thor Peak hike when I jokingly asked him if he filtered his water, his prompt reply was:
"Through my teeth."
Have fun.

"Through my teeth." Nature's filter! And dentures would work almost as well.

I don't recommend what I do to others; we're not all the same. I acknowledge that I represent one extreme of the range of answers to the question. I don't carry any water on a dayhike of Mt. Whitney; I carry an empty bottle. I stop for water several times (at Bob Rockwell's "A" or "B" sources), but I drink my fill and then continue without carrying any.

For heaven sake, carry water! And lots of it. I would carry at least 2, maybe 3 liters, depending on your personal requirements. It is still a pretty good hike from Trail Camp to the summit. You may want to fill up at Trail Camp as it is easier to fill up there, and is a reliable source. I know that I am committing high treason by saying this, but I would use my Steripen just to be sure and avoid getting sick. One trip to the hospital is one trip too many.

I like to carry 1 litre of water with me no matter the availabilty, not necessarily because I will dessicate between water stops, rather, there have been times when:
1. I needed to flush an irritant from the eyes
2. I needed to irrigate a scrape (oops)
3. I had an unexpected vomit (re-hydrate & rinse mouth)
4. #2 was bad enough to delay a fill-up
The body betrays and the weather conspires, hopefully, not on the same day.

Anyone else not filter from this local? I believe the water in this area to be very good purity wise but I still utilize a Steripen because this area is highly used by "backcountry" neophytes. However, I have not filter water in the Sierra in a almost 4 years...and don't filter in this area in outside of the quota period.
