I summited on Thursday, 7/15, with 3 Boy Scouts. I was very proud of them, and was looking over the goodies in the WPS, trying to decide what to award to the boys for their hard work -- a tee shirt, cap, patch, or even a benchmark replica? Alas, I couldn't decide, and was in a bit of a hurry to start the drive home.

Somehow, I got it in my head that the WPS had an online store, so I could pick up that stuff later, so I left empty-handed. Now, at home, I looked, and --ack!-- no such webpage. Now, I could drive back, but it takes me 4 hours to get to Lone Pine. I would love to do that, but it would cost me nearly $50 in gas, both ways, not to mention the time investment.

Am I crazy, or is going in person the only way to get this stuff from the WPS? If so, is anybody heading up there from the LA area who could pick me up something? I'm really drawn to those replica benchmarks...

Richard, congrats on your summit last Thursday! Quillansculpture and I ran into you coming down from the summit, and were impressed with the boys' effort. Wish I could help you out with the mementos, but I'm already back in Atlanta. QS is in L.A. - maybe he could make a run up there for you . . . smile

Good job getting the scouts to the top. I'm a former scout and scoutmaster myself. Those boys will always remember that trip. I will be hiking the main trail next month. If you want me to get some things at the portal store, send me a message. I work in LA county and could easily get them to you.

Thanks, Bulldog! Out of curiosity, though, how do you know it was us you ran into? We met up with at least a couple other groups of Scouts, mostly from other parts of the country.
Here's a shot of me and our boys:

The blonde-haired boy is not mine, but the others are my sons (15, and 12).

I guess the other adult for two-deep leadership was taking the photo?

I'm taking a group of Scouts in from Cottonwood Pass and out the same way next month. I planned to also buy them tee shirts.

We only ran into one Scout group on the 15th, so I assumed it was your group. We saw very few kids on the mountain that day. We headed down from the summit about 1:00 and crossed paths with the kids not far below on their way up - maybe 1:15? Not your guys? Even if not, great job and great pic!

Heading to Mecca West July 25-30 but I live in Coarsegold near Yosemite National Park. I know of the replica (got one myself). I am sure the oval stickers are also part of the "to get" list? Tell me what you need and then I can send it to you via FedEx or UPS. Shoot me a private message and see if I can accomplish the mission.

So, stop kicking yourself!

Have fun.

San Onofre Guy, you are correct - the other adult was behind the camera. Here we all are at TrailCrest:

Good luck on your trip from Cottonwood Pass. That's a longer route, and I didn't feel we were quite ready for that. Definitely worth a tee shirt.

Bulldog, I guess it was another group of scouts you ran into. The summit pic was taken about 1:30, and we headed down about 15 minutes later. But thanks for the compliments.

Now I really feel silly, because I just opened my copy of Doug's book, and there on page 22 it says "you can order items all year round through our website at: http://www.whitneyportalstore.com ". Not only that, but I found a package that I received from WPS back in 2002 - I DID order online! But I guess they found running the online store to be too much extra work.

Thanks, +@ti2d, for your offer, too! What a great community!

Hi We tried the online store about 15 years ago and it was a nice way to find out how many different colors of blue and green exist and the standard Garcia can comes in at least 100 different shapes so to save the UPS driver and the local post office storage of the returned items we gave up .

Bench marks come in the standard brass finish or pewter cost is $19.95 we can ship other items but need to know exact size, color and design of patch or shirt. Thanks Doug send a email to whitnestor@aol.com and I will send the items .

We still sale the Garcia for $49.75 . But recall about 15 years ago we thought we would offer the message board as a commerical free site so sorry to lapse. Thanks Doug

Thanks, Doug. I'll drop you a line when I've decided. It's whitnestor@aol.com, not whitneystore@aol.com?

Wow, that is a really good price on the Garcia! I'll keep that in mind, too. Richard
