Regular occurrence for Shin...
Pretty rare for me these days...
(Of course, if the weather isn't near perfect, I'll be staying in bed.)

Hi Richard,
Nothing is perfect.
Let's take as it comes.

I have 4 pairs of crampons, 2 pair of snow shoes, and all other heavy winter tuff but I haven't used most of them.
You can dress up like a sporting manufacture's product catalogue if the weather is bad.

Old people have to get out more often and do something than young ones. If you don't, pretty soon you won't be able to get out even from own bed.

See you then.

Richard and I started around 7:35 today from Manker.
We had a very good time at Ski hut visiting our old friends.
The tree section was still covered with icy snow and ice.
It was very cold and windy so we spent a very little time at the summit.
It was very nice to have Richard back on the mountains again.
He did very well even though he hasn't been hiking mountains or got older.
We met Mr. BurtW at Ski hut. He looked very fit and strong.

We had a very good start our new year at right place.

It was good to see Shin and Richard at the ski hut. And that was the last we saw of each other. I had left my spikes in my car (again) so instead of going up the icy trail through the trees I went up the Baldy Bowl. With this "short cut" it took me 4-1/2 hours from my car to the summit instead of the usual 2-1/2 to 3 hours. My plan was then to go down the Register Ridge route but I couldn't find the top end of RR, where it meets the Devils Backbone. So, since I didn't want to spend the rest of my life on Baldy, I came down the Devils Backbone. At the notch I said the hell with it and walked down the road instead of taking the ski lift. All in all, I set a personal (negative) record of 8 hours, 58 minutes car door to car door. At least it didn't take me 9 hours.

2 notes: (1) I just had my boots (Zamberlans) resoled so I had great traction going up the bowl, which helped. I sent them to Dave the Cobbler in Seattle and he did a fine job on them. (2) One reason I was so committed to summitting today is that it may be my last time for a long time, especially if it snows next week as predicted. At the end of the month I'm having my right knee replaced. It's long overdue. The only way I've been able to do strenuous hikes in recent months is with the aid of strong pain pills, the kind your mother warned you about. I expect to be on the trail again in Spring; the doc who's doing the job is the same one who replaced my left hip almost 13 years ago and that's taken me all over including up Whitney 3 times.

It was a fun day and a good way to start the New Year.
I'm sore this morning, but the wind isn't howling, so I'm out to enjoy my other favorite activity...

What is it with right knees?

Had my inner half of right knee replaced 01-24-15, it's fine but now have a heel spur on back of left heel result being been in a boot for almost 7 weeks, about 3 to 5 more to go.
Was Dr.'s first procedure, saw the physical therapy team twice, got the Dr.'s OK and went home same day, it pays to lobby the Dr. for what you want, as the BAD germs live in the hospitals.

When I get a little money, I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes.
