Shortcut to Langley didn't happen

Well I wasn't expecting this much snow wasn't going to bring crampons but that's the only thing that can go up there microspikes won't do I've been there before done that. The left side melts before the right side I figured the left side would have some snow but there would be a path right next to the middle rocks going up.

I thought about going up the middle on the Rocks but further looking at it there's a space in between in the middle where the snow and there's no way I can get back up onto the rocks. Just by looking through the picture doesn't look like much but you stand next to that snow and it's steep, without the snow it's a piece of cake to walk up. I should say "for me" I can't do it in micros.

It's not like you can ask for any beta on Facebook this site or Google on the Chute too shortcut to Langley.

It's not snow like you're thinking of it's all
melt freeze ice.

Enjoyed the scenery around there love the area I'll be back possibly next month if not August for sure.

Mark,

Thanks for the update.

From your photo 182 it appears the snow on Old Army Pass is retreating. Was there any indication that hikers are beginning to go up the Pass? I am heading that way in two weeks.

Hey Jim
I didn't see any hikers on the trail going up doesn't mean there wasn't any but I do see two snowfields blocking the trail one big one near the top.

Access via cross country from lake 5 to 6? Never tried it but might give it a shot next week.

Andy when you walking towards fourth Lake before you even get there there's a metal maintenance shed just before you get to the shed stay to your right across the meadow along the trees keep following the trees there's a trail there you're going to stay east of 5th Lake https://flic.kr/p/JPLyoD

zoom in and look to the right of the bare tree do you see that green spot kind of like a rectangle, head for that green spot and above that is 6th Lake

I was up there 2 weeks ago and at that time, there was a small cornice on the last switchback....otherwise excellent conditions.

The cornice was easy, many boot tracks, and to be honest, I would think by now, the cornice would be gone.

I did New Army Pass and dropped down to Soldier Lake for lunch and then picked up the PCT and back around over Cottonwood Pass. It was a 20 mile day, but fun.

Mark,

In your picture "Langley 183", do you proceed directly straight ahead (scramble over the rocks), or is there a path to the right that involves less scrambling?

I'v been up there twice, and in both cases did not find my way to lake 6. I am fairly sure I was not far enough to the right side, but really do not know. The boulders I encountered were house size, not easily scrambled around. I may go again in Sept., but unsure at this point in time.

Thanks!

John, sorry I missed your request. I hope your hike went well. We summited on July 23rd and the route was clear all the way. We did run into a nasty thunderstorm with pea sized hail on the way back to Long Lake. Still, it was a very enjoyable hike.

Sorry John I haven't been on here for some time...
in that picture that green spot in the middle at 12:00 at the top is where 6th lake drains into a pond go over that rectangle green spot and your at 6th lake go across the lake left side then go west...
