Save the Saturday date for the next hiking shindig, and plan accordingly. (Sorry, the date is fixed and non-negotiable. No refunds, no cash value. Not valid with any other offers. Ask your doctor if hiking is right for you...)

Doug says a 10:30am start will make it easy for day-trippers, and 4 out of 5 dentists agree, so that's that. You know the drill: be there or be square. More info to follow...

My doctor told me hiking was not right for me but that walking on dirt or rock was fine.

The mid morning start will allow people to drive up Saturday morning and miss the traffic Friday night, Also the long hike is about 12 miles but mainly down hill with a lot of options and in the past we would place cars with re supplies at different distances, say 1/3 , 1/2 and 2/3 so we can drop off clothing and get more water/snacks and not carry much while we hike. Jack and I have just plain hitched back into town when it got so hot our feet were burning.(summer time).

.We already have a car that is snowed in above the locked gate so we could carry it down if it is still there. Also start along the NRT below the ice , I will make a few trips up to check conditions. Gear should just be spring hiking , jacket and snacks

Flowers may be just showing at the lower end of the hike also and water running through the lower canyons. March is a wild card month which makes it a good hiking season warm days , not hot ,and snow covered mountains surround the area the, Whites to the North, Sierra west and at times snow on the Inyo crest.

Hi guys......

So, the hike is from the Portal to where (town)?

I am just trying to figure if it is doable for me.

Is there going to be a get together afterward, ie, late lunch, or dinner someplace?

Thanks

paul

If we get snow the next few storms we will start lower, the NRT from the campground can be icy and steep side slopes until the Meysan stream area.Or we walk the Portal road.Richard,Mike and I did a test6 hike one year that exited the road and joined the NRT but the 3 steps to the bottom of the canyon was a little rough so we abandoned that option.

We will have a dinner after ,details by end of next week ,where to move the orchestra and the chairs.

The hike is a grouping of small loops so easy to do a loop or car swap .

It would be great if you can make the day.

Sounds great!!!!

Doug, I have a 1964, "Starr's Guide to the John Muir Trail" for a door prize if it is okay with you. It's the red cover edition.

Everyone at dinner can write their name on a piece of paper and put in a hat. The name drawn gets the book.

Your thoughts?

Indeed, the first edition (1934) of Starr's Guide has a green cover. Best to keep it in the safe.

The US judge who has been acting as PG&E's probation officer for the last several years (and recently further involved with the PG&E debacle) has considerable experience in the High Sierras. In 2001 Judge William Alsup wrote "Missing in the Minarets, The Search for Walter A Starr, Jr." For anyone with downtime this the winter, this book is an awesome read. Many of the numerous vintage photos in the book can be found in the Norman Clyde Exhibit in the Eastern California Museum in Independence. In the book we see detective Norman Clyde at his best, finally bringing closure for the Starr family and the posthumous publication of "Starr's Guide to the John Muir Trail and the High Sierra Region."

Yes but had added a section I couldn't support some months ago and I resigned from the board,10 years ago when the process started several of us made a commitment that if the language was corrupted,we would remove the bill,I respect the position of the Board members that still support the bill, they didn't spend over 30 years in the Uitility field and couldn't understand the language that was placed in the bill.I pray that I am wrong .

Awwww.... (I'm really looking forward to the live version.)

So, we're getting closer. Also---not that you need reminding---remember to pack for a wide range of activities and a flexible itinerary. There's quite a bit of snow and ice on the north slopes in the canyon on the NRT, so we may need to alter Saturday's plan a bit. (Oh, I just wish we had some options...😛)

And to be clear, this "event" is open to all who show up. It's a great opportunity to pick the brains of a group of slackers who can't even bother to count how many times they've been up Whitney.
