Your iPhone weather app can only tell you so much about Sunday. Possible spotty rain and potential wind in California translates to PANIC. There may be possible rain before you head up Mt. Baldy Road. If you are driving up under a sprinkling sky on Sunday, please keep going......once you hit our beautiful mountain, the weather can change completely. TEAM THP weather gods have some serious weather predicting skills in the mountains.....but just so that you will stop emailing/texting/messaging us about the weather, here is some advice to alleviate your worries and make Sunday the best day of your life.Â
First words of advice: People and dogs can handle a lil' cold weather. We've done it, our injured community has done it, and you can do it. However, failing to prepare is preparing to fail, so to make it the best day of your life please read on....
• The trail is literally perfect. We have been up and down the trail (with Armor - THP's furry four legged mascot ) multiple times this last month. We know without a doubt that the trail is superb as we have been grooming it with our mountain guide team for the past 3 weeks.
• If you are only hiking to Camp 3 (aka the Coors Light camp) or lower, sneakers will get you there no problem. Grab a couple layers and a beanie for the early morning chills while at our basecamp.
• If you have your sights on Camp 4 (High Camp) or the Summit, bring a pair of gloves, a light jacket, sunscreen and definitely a warm beanie just in case. Although not mandatory, trekking poles and sturdy boots will make your last push to high camp and the top that much easier. Above Camp 3 you will be 9,000+ feet in elevation and the temperature will drop quicker, especially if some clouds roll in. Adding a layer at Camp 3 to get you to High Camp and the Summit will make your day more enjoyable.
• If you know you are going for the Summit, you will need a strong will and a positive outlook. It might be chilly, but the view from the top is worth every single step.
Team THP, who are in our local mountains every weekend and have climbed the biggest mountains all over the world (humble reminder so that you know you're in good hands), will be monitoring the weather and will deliver updates as things change. We know that we will deliver a great day on the mountain and you will leave happy, healthy, and fulfilled if you come prepared and with a good attitude.Â
