I was tired when she told me, at first I thought it was a covid closure, till she handed me the order on paper, I just told her I felt sorry for all they had gone through this year. They had to empty the occupied rooms and close the restaurant.

I have a permit to climb Mt Whitney on October 6 and 7. Coming from northeast and have no experience with wildfires. I realize it’s probably hard to predict how the current fires will behave in the next few weeks but was curious if anyone had a view on how likely or not it is that climbing on Whitney will be happening by the time of my scheduled climb. Is it a long shot at this point or better than that?

Thanks in advance.

It is extremely dry in the Eastern Sierra and the fall winds are still in store. The peak fire season in normal years is September-October. My WAG would be at least a few more weeks of closures. Oct 6-7 would be a crap shoot.

Thanks for the response Andy. Does anyone know if Boundary Peak in Nevada Is impacted by fires as well? Was thinking of that as an alternative if Whitney is closed.

Just came by Boundary today. It is smoked out plus it lies within Inyo National Forest boundaries which is totally CLOSED. It was smoke and haze until east of Tonopah, as a point of reference. I was over closer to Ely the last two days when I finally was free of smoke. And, BTW, the campgrounds were packed anywhere near Ely.

And yet another but good news 9 of the 18 Forest are opening with conditions , Not Inyo , and be aware of the map that is on the Region Site Homepage will show campgrounds open but MAKE sure you drill down to the campground or trailhead because it may be closed.

OK I'm super confused....

2 days ago my 9-23 Whitney permit was emailed to me. This morning another notification came indicating permits were cancelled thru 9-24. The FS map that Doug refers to shows that the Whitney TH & Portal CG are open. So which is it?

Also this map is terribly inaccurate as it shows THs & CGs open that are in areas currently on fire or in evacuations zones, i.e. Big Creek, the southern Sequoia NF & the Gabes. Please correct me if I'm wrong about this.....

Inyo NF's website has the Portal Campground as clearly closed. If it is in Inyo NF it is closed. No camping hiking, fishing, mountain biking, no camping of any sort, no nothing. Think of it like a grocery market that is closed. There is no special access to the pasta aisle. The whole store is closed. No confusion. CLOSED.

CatB,
I hate to sound harsh and I know many have waited patiently for their opportunity to climb Mt. Whitney and many other objectives. I suppose it is a good time to reevaluate objectives just as we have up here in the area. Hoping this changes soon,
Scott

Maybe drill down isn't the correct ,try push the mouse over where you want to go and bingo you are going or you are not.

Good to hear on Inyo NF reopening. So Whintey permits will now be issued for dates after 9/25?

I take your comment to mean that climbing on bad air quality days just isn't feasible?

The latest I saw from our local Inyo supervisor is that tomorrow they will announce an extension of the closure for one more week.

If the forests are closed, why are camp sites on Recreation.gov still available and existing reservations not cancelled along with permits? Thanks.

Here is a link to the announcement:
https://www.sierrawave.net/inyo-national...-remain-closed/

Slice: Answer is possibly because rec.gov has some realistic delay after the FS makes an announcement.
