I am scheduled to do Whitney Trail on June 6 and I am looking for info on trail conditions. Are switchbacks passable? Is cable section passable? Are ice ax and crampons needed? I will appreciate any info. Thanx

Check the "2024" group for updates/photos. At the moment you will need to ascend the snow chute with crampons(not microspikes) and ice axe. Switchbacks are freed up in certain spots and icy in others (so not recommended).

Keep up to date on temperature/weather forecasts. Prep the best you can and turn around if you have to. The experience and terrain are fulfilling enough! Be safe and best of luck!

I went up the trail on Sunday. I saw most people going up the chute and was initially going that way before deciding it looked too hard and moved over to the switchbacks. They were mostly fine with only a few that required some traction. If I were to do it again right now, I think I'd go straight for the switchbacks personally.

Great to hear and thanks for the info. How were the cables section? Any pictures of the switchbacks? I am planning to go on July 1st, I'd imagine the snow condition is going to get better,
