A group of us first timers plan to hike/backpack Mt. Whitney in Aug/Sept and wondering if there are any cabin rentals in the area. We will have some non hikers with us who will be hanging back while we hike and it looks like the portal area is pretty hot for camping that time of year. We do want sleep at a higher elevation than Lone Pine for a couple nights before and don’t want to long drive to trailhead. It looks like there are cabins at the Whitney Portal Campground, but they don’t come up on the recreation.gov reservation system. Haven’t found anything else on standard web searches, so any tips you can give would be much appreciated.

EmmBee,

The Whitney Portal Family Campground is a great place to camp, a true "gem" of the Eastern Sierras. There are also two non reservable walk-in campgrounds at Whitney Portal.

Whitney Portal has a great "vibe" with many enthusiastic hikers/climbers on a mission. There is a picnic area, thundering waterfall, and excellent store (for food and gear) all located at the Trailhead.

The operator of the Whitney Portal Store graciously will provide a massive wealth of information to your group before the hike. Drop in and ask questions.

The cabins at Whitney Portal are not for rent.

Enjoy your hike.

Jim

Hi Jim F,

Thank you so much for the information! Our initial plan is to stay at the Whitney Portal campground at least the night before, if we can get a spot on the same date we end up getting our permit
