Maybe somebody can help me here. You may know that the Whitney trail was built by Gustave Marsh 100 years ago, actually finished on July 17, 1904. His grandson, George, has been interested in full recognition being given to Gustave for his considerable efforts, and was instrumental in getting Mt. Marsh named a couple of years ago. (Mt. Marsh is between Mt. McAdie and Discovery Pinnacle.)
George is an interesting guy, now in his 70s at least, and we have traded e-mails a few times about various aspects of the trail as he learned them from his grandfather, and how they compare to today's features.
Anyway ... George just sent me a picture from an old magazine, showing a section of the trail during its construction, and asked me if I could identify it. I've posted the picture below.
Well, I scratched my head and decided it is a section of trail due north of the outlet to Consultation Lake. I concluded that the picture is taken looking back downhill, and ... is reversed! That would make the ridge in the background part of the east ridge of Candlelight Peak.
So, are you sufficiently motivated to give me your opinion? Those who purchased hikealongpete's video might be willing to scan through it. I don't have any pictures taken in this area, so I am just going on memory. To help, I posted the reverse version of this "supposedly reversed picture" next.
What do you think? If I can't get verification here, I will just have to go up again to check it out.
