I'm planning an early day hike up Baldy this weekend and would like to know if a hiking permit or parking permit is required at Manker Flat and if so info on how to obtain. If one is required and I want to start at 0600 what is the procedure?
Also if you use the ski lift do you require a hiking permit?? Thanks for any info.

I don't know about Manker but I know that the Ranger station at Baldy village open at 8.00 a.m.on Sunday, and I believe you will need Hiking permit and Wilderness pass to park at those trailhead areas,
Please check with them and have a good hike.

There is no Hiking Permit required to climb Baldy. You do, however, need to get an "Adventure Pass" to park at Manker Flats or the Bootjacked Nazi Forest Service enforcement agents will give you a ticket. You can get one at the Baldy Village Ranger Station or there is a guy that sells them near the Icehouse Canyon trailhead. The ski lift costs $5 and is nice to take on the way down to save your knees.

Spike -- I think the phrase you were aiming for was "jackbooted Nazi." Seems a bit extreme to use on some poor shmuck who had writing noncompliance ticklets added to his job description, but to each his own (opinion).

No, what I meant was that they wear boots and a jacket, except in the summer and then it's just boots. The nazi reference has to do with the fact that they continually ticket me even though I have a valid annual adventure pass stuck on the bumper of my jeep. Then I have to pay the postage to mail them my permit number. I believe this to be an abuse of authority, bootblack or no...

(Opinion) Seems odd to me to belittle the enforcement of the rules to keep perserved and protected the places we all love visit. I thought the rules would help keep the rift-raft out but apparently not.

I just did this hike today. Took the Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl trail up, and the Backbone Trail down. I thought about taking the ski lift down from the Notch, but opted for the service road.

One thing to note... if you park at the ski lift parking lot, no Adventure Pass is necessary.

I suggest the Bear Flats Trail from the village as the best conditioning / test hike for Whitney within 75 miles of L.A. An uphill time less than 4:30 (5800 foot-rise) should bode well for Whitney, provided you have no high altitude acclimation issues (which will usually not be brought out at this altitude). The long descent will condition your feet for the trip down from Whitney, and if your footwear is not comfortable or sturdy enough, you'll find out in time to make adjustments. The bighorns drink regularly from the canyon with the tungsten mine (you'll see it way below on the west side when you get high), and you may see a herd at the higher elevations.

An early start is recommended as the 5,500-6,800 foot section gets warm in the summer, and be generous in packing water. Park on the Mt. Baldy Road shoulder wherever you can close to the church (but not in any parking lot surrounding the church itself), and start walking down the side road past the church (there is a parking lot on the side road, but it has very few spaces).

Adventure Pass required (you should display it in your rear view mirror / windshield / dashboard area - I've never had a problem with getting tickets when using the pass more than 150 times).

Tom,
Thanks for the input on the training for Whitney. I did a day hike of Whitney on Wednesday 6/30 leaving the Portal at 1201AM arriving at the Summit at 0830 and car at Portal at 1600 after staying at the BW in Lone Pine the evening of 6/29. I am trying to condition for a Pikes Peak climb later this month and will try others in the area prior to CO. Thanks for all the inputs and if any are training for Whitney be sure to check in with Doug at the Portal Store for he is a gem of knowledge and will gladly share his experience with you. Thanks again for all the inputs and Happy Hiking in this Great State!!!!
