I recently ran across this. It's an official Navy photograph taken on May 16, 1950. From the air, obviously, so it shows a view not many get to see of the southeast side. If you want to see a larger version, go here and scroll down to the fifth row of pictures from the bottom. Click on the thumbnail and then select View Full Image.
This might be particularly useful for those contemplating a climb of Whitney's south face, although the fixations on this board seem to be limited to the main trail, the Mountaineer's Route, and the East Face and Buttress routes.

Bob, I think your photo album is the best collection of route descriptions/photos for the Whitney Trail, Mountaineers Route (Ebersbacher Ledges and routes above the Notch), Thor Peak climbs and Mt. Muir. Thanks for your great work and sharing your passion for the Whitney area with the rest of us! Much appreciated. You've helped a whole bunch of us.

Bob R,
Thanks for sharing but more importantly, thanks for returning to the WPSMB. Your sage wisdom and unparalleled experiences on Mt. Whitney and other climbing adventures have been missed by all that frequent this board. I hope I can say for the entire WPSMB community, welcome back.

Bob, In this 1950 photo Peak 4245 is notely prominently to the right of the Mt Whitney summit. Peak 4245 received some attention on the WPS Board last year. It was pointed out that there seems to be no claim that it has been climbed from the south. ( Of course, it is the south face we see in this photo.) Have you heard of any new info on this subject? Best Wishes, Jim F

Wonderful photo.
I'd love to do the MR sometime, with your photos as my guide, but I am not confident enough to attempt it by myself. By the way, when I did the main route last year, I carefully studied your photo outlining the major points along the Main Trail, and actually brought it with me on the hike. Extremely helpful! Thanks.

Bob,
Great pic, this may inspire more of us to attempt an east face ascent.

MikeE--two weeks from now? Have you ever heard of SAR? If you have, we hope you post your adventure. If you haven't, you might consider mid-July at the earliest.

MikeE:
I haven't been up there lately, but you should be very careful if you really are planning to climb the MR in the current conditions, which are ripe for avalanches. In addition, there have been several severe storms in recent weeks which show no signs of stopping. Since the MR is probably a multi-day climb right now, take food and gear to stay an extra day or two on the mountain if conditions get bad.
