I'm a novice at high altitude trail hiking.

I have a day permit for the hiking trail on 22 May. I do not possess crampons or snow shoes. From what I read here it doesn't sound as though I'm going to get very far along the trail. How far can I reasonably expect to go without specialised equipment?

Is it worth me hiring snow shoes? If so, any suggestions where I might rent them?

Thanks for any help/advice.

It is an amazing and beautiful hike up to Bighorn Park (Outpost Camp area). You should be able to get up there without snowshoes or technical gear, if you get going reasonably early (like 8am). Since you're going for a day hike, that should be a reasonable goal, and you will have a great time, and have scouted the trail for another adventure, another time!

g'luck!

Thanks Ken - that gives me some perspective. I am going to be at the portal the day before my hike to check it out. How far am I allowed to ascend on the trail without the special day pass?

The sign stating that you are entering the restricted Whitney Zone is in the clearing just past Lone Pine Lake. You can day hike up to Lone Pine Lake without a permit.
