Hi Bob,
I'll be at the Mammoth Mt. Inn July 10-12 w/family from Pa. We plan to summit on the 13th. I live in the Sacramento area and have day hiked Whitney 11 times the last 3 years. Last summit was June 18th this year. I would be more than willing to help any way I can. You can reach me at mavsactivetravel@aol.com.

I made the summit this past October with my son who was 14 at the time. It was a great experience for him, and it was precious time for us to spend together. I think its great to see kids wanting to be outdoors doing awesome climbs. Future Ed Viesturs right?? My son plans on listing his summit climb on his college applications... Good luck and safe journey's!!

Twenty years ago while in the boy scouts I hiked Whitney with kids as young as 11. They were well conditioned with training hikes starting from February through July.

I hiked Whitney again a week ago. If you are taking young kids just be prepared. The weather changes quickly and we experienced cold gusting winds on June 27th at Trail Camp; enough wind where guy lines were required to keep your tent from blowing away. I was told some people were stuck on the summit one night before we arrived when temperatures were dropping into the 30s. You can expect to cross snow just after mirror lake to trail crest. Water proof your boots and bring gaitors and some dry socks just in case.

Hiking poles were very helpful in crossing the snow. Expect Ice on some parts of the 99 switchbacks if you get that far early in the morning.

If you are doing the day hike, take some headlamps. There were plenty of people coming down from the summit at 6 and 7PM with still a three hour hike ahead of them down to the car. Also bring a water filter or tablets to refill your water supply. Good Luck and most importantly have a great time!

It sounds like an awesome idea that you are taking your daughter as well as your other two children. I'm 21, and did Whitney with my best friend just last week. I only wish that I could've had that experience starting at 10. My only advice is to be sensitive to their needs which it sounds like you already ahev that planned out. I saw a few couples or parents/children where one was far ahead of the other because they weren't fast enough. Make sure she enjoys it and you will be able to go on so many more fun trips likes this with her, and your other children, in the future!!!

I just got back from a 3 day training hike on the Tahoe Rim Trail with my 10 year old daughter. We covered 30+ miles at 8,000'-9,000'. We leave for Whitney August 14th from Horseshoe Meadow and will take the New Army Pass Route.
My daughter has been my outdoor partner since she was 7 years old. The times we spend outdoors together are very special and you find out so much about their lives as you put in the miles on the trail.
If you teach your kids to love the outdoors and to enjoy the simple pleasures and rewards that come from your adventures you will have passed on a great gift and you will have something you can share together for a lifetime.
See you on top!!!

Gary: Yeah, Bob made it, as did his son, bro-in-law and niece. Ditto for me (Bob's bro)and my wife, daughter and 2 of her friends. 9 of the BV's 12 permits for the day saw the summit. Flatlanders from the Midwest, all.

Congratulations to all of you! You flatlanders are setting a precedent. If you can do it, then the rest of us can do it. Hope you got your t-shirts and medallions! Have someone make a shadowbox to put on your wall with your pictures and memorabilia. Mt. Whitney will never look the same. You are now part of the mountain and the mountain is now part of you. Bragging rights!

hi evrey one , we are back in ohio, the thirteen and 15 yr old made it, as well as my self and lots of others in our party. the 10 yr old was awesome but the climb thru the snow fields to the switch backs finished her off, but she really enjoyed the trip as did we all, i t was great to see everyone there, a special thanks to the young couple who helped the thirteen and 15 yr old out with water as they got 2 hours ahead of me as i was with the 10 yr old
