Well, got my rejection notice on Saturday the 24th. We were a party of 3 for entry dates on Aug 17-19th. This is the first time in 7 years that the dates were full before we got picked. I guess we will try the walk in for any cancellations. Congrates to all who got their passes. Hope to see you on the mountain in August!

nascarskot -- is your August full moon overnight the night of August 27/morning of August 28? There will be a total lunar eclipse at approximately 3-4 am on August 28. If the weather is nice, a good night to leave your tent in your pack and camp beneath the stars.

A good thread to mention this: If you end up with a vacancy, shoot me an e-mail. I will probably be able to join you. Trade you for some Whitney stories, point out some of the lesser-known sights, share some obscure history. Give hints on where to camp and where to get the best water. I'd be logistically independent, so wouldn't be a burden.

Some of my most enjoyable climbs of this mountain have been with people I have met on this board.

My uncle is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer right now. I have a solo permit for Sept 1st. If you haven't gone by then you can definitely have my space. I'll have to review the rules about swapping permits. If need be I'll even meet you at the ranger station on Aug 31st and see if we can get them to let you take my spot. Take care.

DocRodneydog, I too may have excess capacity depending upon what my bother-in-law decides and another I've met on this board decides. I have seen the charge on my CC but have yet to visit the PO Box to see the actual date. Any cancellation by either party will be first offered to you. Take care.

DRD:

This John Muir quote always brought me comfort:

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off you like falling leaves."

My thoughts and prayers are with you, and I'm sure we'll see you on the mountain.

All the best,
Laura

DocRodneydog, something tells me that you will be making it to the summit of Whitney this season. I wish you the best in your upcoming challenge.

I too, love the John Muir quote that HL posted above. Here is a simple quote I wrote. This one's for you.
"May the sun shine in your life, may the rain refresh you and may you always weather the storm." mc

"The mountains are measured for their height but the achievements of one who climbs the mountains are immeasurable." m.c.

Doc,
Hang in there, as you can see the group on this board
is a great one. Great to see others willing to open a slot
for him. Your the best!! I'd give up my spot to anyone facing
what you will face Doc. Needless to say, DENIED was what I got
in the mail yesterday from the gang at the Inyo station. Heck, did
it last year and I could always walk in and "wait for a handout".
My hopes and prayers are with ya Doc, someone will get you a spot
up those 14,497' count on it!!!

¡Hasta bien pronto!
See ya at the top, be it of this world or, another.

Stay strong, Doc! Lymphoma prevented me from climbing 7 years ago, but I've since summited 4 times (hopefully 5 after this year) and am now 6 years cancer-free. Do what your health pro's tell you, treat your body well, and relinquish the episode to a "bump in the road"! Confidence and great support can do amazing things.

Yippee! I got my notification in the mail this week. I have been fortunate 3 years in a row now. Best of luck to those still waiting - hope you get one.
After 2 years I still have never been able to plan it right and come down off the mountain in time to try one of Doug's famous burgers. Maybe three times is a charm and I will get to enjoy a Doug Burger and a beer.
Doc - thoughts and prayers go out to you - I may have an open spot if you are interested.

Wow thanks for the love and support everyone. I really appreciate the kind words and offers.I am going to walk up with my buddy until I get a permit. This is now a metaphor for my life. I will get to the summit this season and I will survive.
