Atta boy! Make something good come out of this. Your attitude is already an inspiration.

I got my rejection letter a couple of days ago for my overnight trip, but that just meant I went to plan B. We are coming in from Cottonwood on August 5th. I plan on spending the night of the 7th on the JMT just below the junction with the MMWT, and we will be on the summit the night of August 8th, after bagging Muir, Crook's Peak, and Keeler Needle on the way up. Anyone on the summit on the 8th, we'll see you there.

Status Report, 3/29/07
I just got this from Cindy at the Forest Service:

Tomorrow, 1100 letters will go out -- both reservations and regrets. That should catch up with all but the exceptions, which include reservations with declined credit cards (they will phone those people). There still are lots of checks to deposit -- the letters will go out before the deposits. Then there is the pile of rejected applications: those people will be notified as to what went wrong (except the ones with no address or phone number.)

This year, they reserved spots for 14,360 hikers, 2,000 more than last year. (More people must be applying for more of the off-season slots).

And the folks processing the pile of applications enjoy seeing everyone's excitement here on the message board:
Quote:
We do giggle when we read some of the postings... the message board has helped us keep our spirits up, while slogging through a lot of clerical work (when we would rather be outside). I wish we had more time to clarify all the misconceptions! but alas, this week we are down to just 3 of us now, as staff we borrowed for the lottery have to return to their regular jobs.

...And just for Don D (see top of page 1, and middle of page 4): I hope that Charlie Brown got his Valentine.
There is some info on the Forest Service MMWT Reservation Availability page, but the table showing what is still available is not there yet.

And for Meckers (top half of page 4) talking about "temporary authorizations" on his card: Permits are handled the same way mail orders are -- they are charged one time, and no temporary hold is placed. If it shows up as temporary, that is just the time it takes to go through the credit card process.

Five day permits for Monday, July 16, there is a God.

I plan to have a couple newspaper writers in tow, plus my lil sis. Hopefully it won't be a rainy day and Monday.

I am so excited! After reading everyone elses messages, I am bold enough to submit my own. Finally got my letter of acceptance in the mail the other day! I am a first-timer who will be following in my mother's path, albeit 30 years later! See you in September!

Kinda bummed got my rejection letter on Saturday, we'll have to go the walk in route. Last year we were able to secure a permit by calling in once a week and jumping on the first available opening............ hope to cya on top.

Tried sending this earlier so sorry if repeat appears on the board. Received my rejection letter on Sat. for an overnighter in July; wasn't shocked though. Thinking about Langly instead and I've day hiked to Cottonwood Lakes in the past. Would appreciate info/advise from vets re: trailhead location and anything else that would be helpful

Woo hoo! I got my acceptance letter on 3/31! It was a surprise because my check still hasn't posted. Party of 7, entering MMWT on 6/12, exiting via same on 6/14. My birthday (#50) is 6/13, so I'm hoping to be on the summit on that day with birthday cake (okay, maybe cupcakes. Or maybe Clif bars with candles), and 3 of my sisters. I'm stoked!

DocRodneyDog, one of our party is a prostate cancer survivor from two years ago. He may have had an advantage, being a doctor, cuz he knew who the best surgeons are, but it would appear that the surgery was completely successful, with no bad side effects. I wish you the same success - and hope to read a summit report from you!

Best wishes,
Rich

Doc,
No, I don't even know what an Anthony Robbins Firewalk is. I just heard the quote somewhere and thought it fit me. My wife thinks that kids take to me because they recognize a kindred spirit. I just think one should never underestimate the value of FUN.

I hope you will make the summit on your 50th! I will hopefully summit Whitney with HikerLaura and possibly others on June 10th. Then, if all goes as planned, I will summit Kilimanjaro on my 50th on June 30th! I had not yet thought about what to bring to celebrate. (It will have to stay fresh for 7 days on the mountain...maybe a marshmallow with a match lit for the candle!)

I also like your quote, "It's never too late to have a happy childhood." I have a similar quote, "It's better to be a late bloomer than never to have bloomed at all". mc

I'm not a vet but here's some good information on finding the trailhead and which choices to make on Langley:

I might do the Cottonwood loop for a 2-3 night trip, since the lottery left me Whitneyless...well, unless a walk-in works out. Might still try the Cottonwood lakes loop though, regardless, as it sounds like a nice one.

I was just about to give up and voila' I got a pass for 4 on July 24. A perfect time, though the Badwater is being run then. Good luck to the rest of you.
