I know early winter snow can put a damper on many peoples' hopes of summiting Whitney, but I'm getting pretty excited about this early snow! If we do get our first dump this Wednesday/Thursday, the winter climbing season is on!!!

Time to start making my winter tick list.....hmmmmm.....

For those of you without winter camping experience, find someone who knows what they're doing and head out into the white stuff. Winter camping is the best! Solitude, quiet, and the fresh winer smell.....yum.

Yeah Gusto...while I'd be disappointed at having to cancel my re-scheduled attempt next week I'm always excited at the prospect of winter. I love breaking out warm clothes and winter gear...

I'd like to get out there again this winter to do some hiking...March was pretty humbling, but it was a blast..

I was on IR last winter after buying a lot of new toys which I used once before injuring myself. I got the itch...big time.

Just remember to bring your sunglasses when you get into the snow.... Had to turn back in June because someone(father in law) in our group forgot his sunglasses(left them on dash of truck) and started to go snowblind. He offered to wait at trail camp but other person in group(brother in law)said he didn't feel like it anymore.... So since they drove I couldn't fight it

Would love to get into snow camping, but I wish the storm had held off one wee. I'm heading up to Yosemite and was hoping to hike Half Dome. I think it'll be too icy to make the final ascent up the cables. Anyone with experience with that here? The snow is supposed to hit tonite, and I was going to make the hike Saturday. Any hope?

-Laura

PS: I do have a back-up plan of North Dome from Yosemite Falls, but was really hoping for HD.

HikerLaura:

Keep an eye on http://www.yosemite.org/vryos/ for real-time shots of how Half Dome is looking snow-wise, albeit from a distance.

For those of you looking for a little extra fun, you can always tag a sled along. Be mindful though, those things pick up speed fast!

My friends and I hike up to the base of Tuckerman's Ravine (NH) every year and do our "Annual Sledding Run." Get's pretty exciting when the trails get icy!

By the way, it can DANGEROUS. Be safe.

Thanks, BD! According to the latest shot there, it's GORGEOUS up there. Of course, we all know how that can change in a matter of minutes.

I'll check one more time before leaving tomorrow, and then grill the first few rangers I see! ;-)

Happy hiking!
