Has anyone been to Army Pass recently? (Either old or new) And can report on conditions there?

I've seen pretty recent pics of trail crest, the swtchbacks, etc., so I've got a good idea of conditions there. Thank you all for sharing.

I had originally planned a trip for late August over NAP, down Rock Creek, over to crabtree, and then up & over Whitney. Had permits lined up and everything.

Due to circumstances (new job, taking a 3-week break between them) I now won't be able to go in August. I've decided to push the trip up to the last week of May. Should be do-able with this years' lack of serious snow. Judging from the permit availability page(s) I should have no problem obtaining the needed papers.

(I'm giving my August permit to another permit leader, as he still wants to go, as well as the others in the group. One person from the original group can go with me, good to have company.)

Well, I've got my permits starting at New Army Pass on May 27 and exiting at Whitney Portal on June 1.

I know the cornice at NAP is usually bad way into the summer, and may make a slight detour cross-country to the south (on the same slope) where it's "less steep" and then walk north along the ridge to catch the trail. If it's not buried.

Was (in August) going to go through Mitre Basin, but that seems like a long-shot now. Will stay on trail down rock creek and then over Guyot pass.

Would love to hear from anyone who has been in the area recently. Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

(Yes, I've axe and crampons & know how to use them)

Thanks, VFred.
Didn't even know about that "other" board. I've always viewed this board as the definitive source for Whitney and the immediate area. Guess I need to get out more. wink

Bob-
Thanks for taking the time to post those pics, valuable info to me. (and I know conditions prolly will change in the three weeks to go before my trip)
