Ain't a wolf, fox, lion, weasel, couger. Just a dog. Maybe I should replace it with westcoastdawg. I don't want to be mistaken for any of those pedigree mutts.

From my rough calculation, it's Mt. Olympus 7962' (Washington).

Note that Mt. Katahdin isn't the eastern most point of land, but from what Bob R. wrote I presume that one can see the farthest east from its summit and hence see the sunrise before it can be seen from other parts of the contiguous 48 states. Similarly Mt. Olympus isn't the western most point of land but one can see the farthest west from its summit and hence see the last sunset in the contiguous 48 states.

BTW, other contenders were Mt. Rainier 14,410' (Washington) and Mt. Shasta 14,179' (California). They weren't as far west as Mt. Olympus and their greater heights couldn't compensate for that.

Taking this thread even farther afield; sorry.

Thanks, Bob K. I now need only to know the answer for Florida, to have the "four corners." As opposed to the highest points in these four states. Another silly climbing list of mine.

You might consider getting a handle for your zipper in addition to using zipper as a handle.

An apology in this thread...

Which brings me to the list of Display Names that I may use:
- Sierra Snail
- Richard Piotrowski
- Addict
- Mr. Off Topic.

I'm sure others could come up with a few more creative ones.

Mr. Whitney, formerly Sierra Snail, formerly Richard Piotroski.
MWFSSFRP (the monogram for short)

(Actually, I had some free time and wanted to help make this tread the longest on the board.)

Since the object is to make this the longest thread, and seeing that the bounds of good taste have been completely shredded already, I offer the following on the naming of mountains, in this case, Thor Peak: Leda woke up in the morning to find, instead of a swan, this bearded old man lying beside her. He says, Hello, I'm Thor. (I know, this scrambles mythological families a bit.) And she says, "You think YOU'RE thor!"

Was that the year that it rained about 6" on the field while playing against you guys and we got our butts whooped? I cannot recall if that was '95 or '96. I was in college during those years and would drive to Knoxville for most of our home games (a 5 hour drive from where I was in school in KY). I guess that's why I don't mind the 4 hour drive to Lone Pine...I've already been "trained." PS ~ GO VOLS! (There's also another G8R on this BB that I know of - B.J. where are you?)

Also, yes I recall the outcome of the playoffs in '01. I was thinking we were on our way to the Rose Bowl. What a disappointing ending. I think some of my orange blood drained from my body that year. cry

The 1995 game was in the swamp. You guys had a 30 -16 lead late in the second qtr. We roared back for a 62-37 romp in an utter downpour. We were soaking wet in the stands and did not care.

1996 in Neyland was when we built a 35-0 lead with about ten minutes to go in the second quarter. Yeah the final was 35-29, but the game was never that close. TIme for another annual war with the vols in g'ville in a few months...

What's an AsABat?

It's common on the long trails to take, or be given, a trail name. There are many people I consider friends who I know only by their trail names. Because they are easy to remember, it helps the trail grapevine communicate information up and down the trail.

Contrary to the belief of a few hiking partners, my trail name does not refer to hiking "as a bat out of Hades." Rather, it refers to "blind as a bat." In 1996 and 1997 I had new corneas installed. Prior to the transplants I spent a short time legally blind because of keratoconus. Hence, I was blind as a bat. When others ask how I got my name, I relate this information and remind them to fill out their organ donor cards.

Not drawing any comparisons to myself, I can relate to John Muir who, before his conservationist career, was quite the inventor. He punctured an eye in an industrial accident and lay in darkness for two months until his vision slowly returned. That was a turning point in his life, and he later wrote,

"Now had I arisen from the grave!
God has to nearly kill us sometimes, to teach us lessons,"

and later,

"I bade adieu to all my mechanical inventions,
determined to devote the rest of my life to the study of the inventions of God."

BTW, yes, I spell it as one word. I started out writing it "Asabat" but confused too many people, so adopted the funky capitalization "AsABat."
