I went in to get a mani-pedi today. The woman took one look at my still black toenail from the MR a month ago and turned to her co-workers in dismay. Suddenly I had three women clucking over my foot as I tried to explain that it was Richard's fault. shocked

MC (Mountain Climber) had talked to me a few months ago about heading up the MT for an overnight, and I had excitedly accepted. So she drove down from Vancouver late last week, and we met up at the Portal this past Friday night. S^2 was also there to go up the MR that night, so we had din-din with Doug Sr. and Chris from Mammoth. I sat there spellbound at their stories for about two hours, realizing all along that I have so much to learn and experience yet! The next morning, Doug Forbes showed up to acclimatize for his one-day assault, and joined us for a warm-up to Lone Pine Lake.

So, here's the skinny on the current (last weekend) conditions:

1) Can you say summer? Well, at least the trail is that dry. It was warm during the day, but definitely got chilly that night up at Trail Camp. No frozen water bottles, but it was an up-tick from earlier in the week for sure. Richard put it best when I asked about the switchers: "The snow is trivial, just don't slip." Really, you're on rock all the way past them now, except maybe first thing in the a.m. where the top has one step that's a bit, well, crumbly-icy.

2) It was new-gear weekend for me: new Osprey Ariel 60 pack; new North Face down jacket; new bivy sack; new 40deg sleeping bag; new Montrail Comp Trail shoes (which arrived at work about 45min before I left!). What does this all add up to? Well, about 38#! For those that know me, I was doing the "OMG MY PACK'S UNDER 40#!!" dance of joy! Thank goodness it all worked out well. And yes, I'm aware that that's STILL too much weight to be carrying. blush

3) MC hung in there really well all day. She also had a heavy pack and showed a lot of determination to get to Trail Camp on her own two feet. She's in the final throes of prep for Kili later this month, and even though we ended up hiking separately, she looked strong. When I saw her on the backside traverse, she was moving steadily towards the summit. This was her first time back to the MT in 20 years, hence the milestone. I wish her all the best for Kili.

4) Trailside Meadow Rocks.

5) I got to Trail Camp at about 4:15 (we had a late start), so I decided to romp up Wotan's Throne. Good times climbing the northwest ridge side, mostly Class 2 with a few "Class 3" moves I guess. Couldn't find the register anywhere, though. Oh well, some more unique and beautiful views of the Whitney and Pinnacle Ridges.

Took about an hour to get up, and down in time for dinner! (BBQ chicken in a white wine reduction sauce with shallots and capers over tri-colore pasta!) Oh yeah, you know you want me on your next trip!

6) Left TC at 5:15 a.m. to start working up the switchers, summited at around 8:30 or so. Second on the summit that morning after getting passed by PCT guy who was flyin' up the trail. Gorgeous morning, no wind, and fantastic air quality. Looked at Muir on the way back down (from it's base, I did scramble up there), and he looked at me, and we mutually decided that I need more prep in the climbing department. I'd have to save the bubbly (yes, there was bubbly) for another time. I was particularly worried about the downclimb. I'll get there, I'm sure. Maybe I jus' need a big shtrong maaaann to help me... smile

7) Hiked out with Doug Forbes, and got to the Portal around 4:30. And, really, this is why we do what we do:

I think this needs to be called the Moose Burger. Dbl cheese and when Sheridan asked if wanted bacon, how could I say no???

Great times, gorgeous weather, and one long haul of a trail. As always, the pics are at:

And on to the next adventure...

To be back on Whitney after 20 years is indescribable. So, I will summarize with the highlights of my weekend with Laura.

The famous Portal Burger
Meeting Doug Sr.
Meeting Laura and Doug Forbes
Meeting Richard on the trail Fri. while on a short acclimatization hike to Lone Pine Lake
Seeing Richard again just before I got to TC as he was coming down from the summit on Sat.
Perfect weather
The most stunning scenery (the word grandiose kept coming to my mind)
No wind at TC

The summit

The beauty of Whitney and the surrounding mountains were as stunning as I had remembered. This trip for me was about the journey...the summit was just a bonus (a nice one)! I was constantly looking around and marveling at the majesty of this special place. I stepped onto the summit at noon on Sunday as a large group (PCT) were leaving. That left 3 guys in sleeping bags (they had come up the MR and were exhausted) one other hiker and me. We were all silent for about 5 minutes and it was magical. As I was taking it all in, suddenly a lone figure leaps over the ledge of the East Buttress route in spider man fashion and shouts "I made it"! I was completely startled. Next, a female climber followed him over the ledge. I mentioned that my hike up Whitney was an acclimatization hike for my Kili trip and the male climber said, "are you M.C. Reinhardt?" When I asked how he knew (I was in shock), he said "I'm Miguel". Yes, it was Miguel Forjan and Michelle Fossana. We took a few summit pix and I stayed on the summit for an hour. Miguel sent me a link to the photos of their East Buttress route: Photobucket. I felt privileged to be standing on the summit of Mt. Whitney again. What a great weekend! And Laura, you are an inspiration. I hope to hike with you in the future and spend more time together next time!

Wow..cool trip reports. That solidifies it for me..as far as I'm concerned you don't need to pack food for a trip..just make sure Laura is on your "supply list".. That looks like some tasty pasta!

Great photos by both of you..congrats on another summit! Looking forward to hearing about Kilimanjaro...!

Hi Moose. My name's Greg Lukenbill, GLuke on the Message Board. I'm a special ed. teacher in the Inland Empire. So, I have my summers free to hike and do whatever. I'm planning a day hike of Whitney on July 1 and was going to attempt to summit Mt. Muir. You talked about the exposure and Bob's pics of Muir. Do you know where I could find this link or could you give it to me. I would appreciate it and any advice on Muir. I'm not taking any rope or pro. I'm just going to see if I can do it. If I can't I know the mountain isn't going anywhere.
Also, I enjoy all your latest trips and pics. They're very helpful. I'm also going to try and summit Big Willy and Tyndall, July 11-15. Your report last month was very helpful.
Thanks for all the info. Hope to hear from you soon.

Laura & M.C.: Great trip report and photos! I enjoyed tagging along to Lone Pine Lake with you ladies on Saturday 6/9/07 for a little warm-up hike after breakfast at the Portal Store (also always a treat). Great company and conversation on our hike down from the mountain on Sunday as well, Laura...and yes - No Whining (I love the plackard on your pack). Good luck on Kili later this month M.C. (I am sooo jealous!)

I was having camera trouble, but a few captioned photos telling the story of my summit dayhike on Sunday 6/10/07 can be found here:

Thanks, Doug. Great to have you "tag" along! I, too, liked Laura's plackard, "No Whining". I did have to turn it around several times so we could read it...Laura, you'll have to secure that thing! I leave for Kili on Thursday; it will be an adventure!

Thanks, GigaMike and madeintahoe! It was a phenomenal weekend; one I will treasure always. I look forward to getting back to the Sierras; for now, I will continue to explore the beautiful Cascades, Olympics and the Columbia Gorge.

GLuke - I am a class 3 climber who has never done protection climbing with a rope.
Last week my 16 year old son and I both pulled ourselves up onto Muir. It was a bit hairy the last 20 feet, but definately doable with not a whole bunch of skill. Just patience and deliberation!
The funny part was that our GPS told us that the peak just south of Muir was Muir. We climbed that and looked UP at Muir to the north and knew we were in the wrong spot. Down we came and then up on Muir. It is a very satisfying summit to sit upon!
Give it a try.

Hi ClimbSTRONG

I am very impressed with your goal to climb the west coast 14ers with your son! 7 down and 9 to go; you're almost halfway there! Good luck. Your TR for Whitney last week was great; congrats on Whitney, Mt. Muir and the peak just south of Muir!

Hi Laura,
I had left a note on Flicker about a comment you made about the proper exposure for your two photos taken toward the west because of the lighting on your main trail milestone hike. Well, perhaps I should have been in this section. I took the libery of rendering the two photos in Photoshop to see if the information was there and I was able to spruce them up a bit. If you are interested in the result and discussing what I did with them, send me an email address to my email:dietcokepls@msn.com and I will send you a copy. It is the least I can do for the excellent job you did of showing the trail with your photos. Since your post I summited Whitney on July 1, my first time there. Your photos where a big help. Thank you, Dick
