Community College teacher. Work 10 months and summers if I choose. Basically I get to backpack once or twice a year. Married with two boys 2.5 and 5. THAT'S really the reason it's once or twice a year. My flexible schedule as a college prof also means I am more available to be with my boys. Can't wait until they're ready to hit the trail. I save my "time off" from family duty for a 3-4 day solo Sierra trip. Just finished this year's trip two weeks ago (In, Army Pass, Langley, Soldier Lake, Miter Basin, New Army, Out = 32 miles) Now I wait and plan next year.

I just finished my first year at Caltech, and I'm about halfway through a summer internship with an atmospheric sciences group at JPL (I'm working on adapting a radiative model for Titan to Uranus and Neptune).

If someone were to try to find me, he would do well to try my room first. During the school year, especially between Sunday and Thursday, he might come to join one of Purcell's or Apostol's all-night parties. At another time he might walk in on me sitting, arms crossed, fuming, puffy-faced, cursing under my breath, back to emacs and gdb, the roommates in my single. Failing to find me there, he would want to know that I'm most likely either in the kitchen or somewhere in the transverse ranges. He would be lucky to find me in the kitchen; he might run into a fresh loaf of pumpkin spice bread or a hot batch of banana crumb muffins. He would be unlucky not to find me there, for he'd need sharp eyes indeed to spot me from Tech through the smog in the mountains. Of course, since finding me in the mountains is hopeless, he might as well try the next best option, which is driving in the general direction of the beach and looking for a worn-out, sunburned, grinning cyclist on his way home and doing his best to avoid the merciless drivers of Los Angeles. I'm currently recovering from a small bicycle accident, but I'll be back in the hills as soon as I can (and hopefully back in the Sierras before fall term).

Construction manager of large high rise projects....10 days off per year and 60-80 hours a week. My adventures are packed tightly into weekends. Luckily I love my career, but do question it in comparision to my love of adventure.

I work in manufacturing for a biotech company. I work 4/10s (8-6:30) Sunday through Wednesday so I have 3 day weekends every week. Having Thursday-Saturday off is great for beating the crowds!

I'm a secretary for a large company, 28 years in Sept. We just started working a 9/80 schedule in May, so now I get every other Fri off! The last weekend I didn't make it to the mountains was Jan 12th,2006 and that was for surgery. I love my job and I can retire in 4 yrs, 3 months! grin I get 5 weeks off, plus a few paid holidays.

I hope that doesn't mean you're going to eat me for lunch and leave me in the dust tomorrow on Middle Pal. I hope for a civilized climb.

You work? And here I thought you spent your days hiking, BPing and biking all day...

When I lived in Anaheim during my college days, I used to step on snails barefoot (think smushing between toes) immediately after every rainstorm. Ah, fun college days...

That's why I chose the nickname, The Tortoise. They seem to get more respect than the snails!

I live in Kern County so I am fairly close. I coach soccer and junior trap. I have my work schedule fixed so I have three days off per week but I do have to spend a night at work each week.

That said, I looked for this post/thread after reading one on another website called "Mt. Whitney, The Sierra Nevada & beyond..." The name of the post was "Post this I dare you". It seemed to be refering to this thread on this website. Check it out. I thought it was funny or chalenging.

Environmental Compliance Manager.

Used to work for a consulting company that had me traveling all over the USA to customer's sites and working 80+ hrs per week. The pay was nice, but the long hours really ran me down, and (more importantly :() cut into my "mountain scrambling time", so I found a job working for a govt agency. Its less pay, but its more secure and I work on a 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off). Also get comp time for those periods when I have to do environmental reports for other depts.
