I know you guys have probably seen 100s of "Whitney sightings" in commercials, movies, and advertisements. Now, I guess, that I'm aware of the Whitney area..the mountain pops out at me anytime I'm leafing through a magazine..! From National Geographic Adventure (October 07) here is Whitney with someone doing some trail running. Looks like the area between UBSL and Iceberg maybe? And then the October 07 Backpacker magazine had at least three Whitney mentions in it... The first a North Face ad..I'm guessing this is on the ridge leading up to Mt. Russell? Then there is the Summit for Someone ad (I think we met some Summit for Someone people on our Thor Peak hike in April Richard?). I'm not positive..but this looks a bit like the North Fork maybe? And though it isn't quite totally Whitney..the same issue had this little blurb for best sunset location.. Always cool to see the area from other perspectives (advertisers!).. Regards.. Chris

Chris I just saw the second picture the other day in my Backpacker magazine...it caught my eye because of the rock that guy is on...I instantly thought Alabama Hills rock because of the color and texture...makes me wonder if that person is on some boulder in the AH and they really zoomed in on the Whitney. Thank you for posting this!

Oops..somehow double posted there. Yeah..perhaps they could have zoomed in like that..I dunno. I'm sure Bob R. has been on that rock and probably has a photograph of it! Chris

I think madeintahoe might have it right...I searched the web for Damian Benagas, who is the North Face athlete that is in that second picture. They've done a few more advertisements from the same trip I'm guessing in the Whitney area.. Anyway..the full photograph shows the treeline in the right corner..and it looks like he is pretty far below it judging from the angle..(?) (I'll bet Wayne could tell us exactly where the photo was taken from..hehe..) Chris

Saw this Editor's Note at the beginning of the December 2007 issue of Backpacker Magazine. The title of the column would have fit a few of my visits to Whitney... Sounds like Kurt was their guide.. Chris

A number of those photos look to me like they may be composites.
i.e. two photos edited together
So if you're asking "Where was that taken?" the answer may be NOWHERE because it's not a real place, but rather a creation of a graphics artist.
The advertising industry is well known for 'creating' locations.

Hey Chris, I'm sure the photo in question was taken in the Alabama Hills. In fact, I was near that spot just last week, reconnoitering the arches for my first time in the Alabama Hills. I was quite surprised to discover that the Alabama Hills, as a gealogical formation, was composed of the same granite as the Sierra Crest, but weathered totally different. I always thought the Hills were volcanic, but now that I've scrambled through them, I see the error in my perception.

A number of those photos look to me like they may be composites. The only one I'm thinking might be a composite is the first one. I mean...the trail running dude doesn't look like he's dressed for any kind of snow (which is evident in the upper part of the photo)..and frankly..the Mountaineers Route just doesn't seem like a good "trail running" trail (?)... Good points.. BeachAV8R

In the first picture, he is high on the rock field, between Upper Boy Scout and Iceberg lake. When you are walking west through the lower Moraine field you go up until you reach a flat area. It sits between larger rocks and forms a protected area some people camp in. Once you pass that the trail goes over a large rock field which is angled northwest to southeast. On top of this rock field is where this picture was taken. Just after you pass this area, you reach the waterfall area, which some people use to climb up to Iceberg lake. The upper moraine field does look like that in early June. Trouble is though, you could probably only run for 20-30 feet there. You would have to sprint and shoot.
In the second picture, that is clearly taken from down in the Alabama Hills. The white diamond shaped snowy area in back of the runner is Thor Peak. His right hand is pointing down toward a darker semi circle area. That is the low spot at the top of the hill which climbs from Lower Boy Scout Lake up to the bowl of Thor Peak.
The third picture is in the lower North Fork, just below Lower Boy Scout Lake, sometime in the spring when the snow is deep enough winter climbers stay in the center all the way up. I would guess the trees on the upper left are the trees on the top of the Ebersbacher ledges. They kind of melt into the trees more in the center, but they are not actually connected. That rocky outcropping just under the "ts" is where the inviting canyon to the left comes out, a few hundred feet above the main Mt. Whitney trail. This picture can't be very far from Lower Boy Scout Lake. That is why the canyon goes down so far before you hit the large pine trees

Beach, here is a photo my son took of me in the Alabama Hills last week: The photo was actually shot through one of the arches, as you can see here: I believe the photo in the magazine was shot in the hills behind me, but a little more to my left (viewers right).

Nice comparison shot Wayne! Wow...Thor and Whitney look so close in those photographs. Looks like you could just stroll up there...

A bit of a bump of an old topic (sad to see Kent's name above this post..I suspect he will have a long lasting presence here on the forums..) but I'm sure nobody here will recognize this photo from the last page of this month's Backpacker Magazine.. Regards..! Chris

The pic wasn't taken from any "peak"... Yeah - the last time I was at that location a couple crows were looting banana chips from a stashed pack.. And Richard was eating a piece of half frozen pizza..

Hi Chris, I think this picture #2 was taken on the trail of between Upper boy's lake and Iceberg lake. There is a rock looks like a wall along the side of trail. I sent a picture to you by email. What do you think? I took this picture 9/4/2009 when I went to the Iceberg lake. Sorry, I don't know how to put a picture on message board, yet. Shin
