We've been discussing this here as many of you seem to have great experience in the area and wondered how many times the members of this board have climbed it.

We did our first climb up Whitney this past October and had a great time! Don't know why it took us so long but we will be back soon!

Four times from 2000 to 2003. I plan to try another dayhike in 2009 when I turn 60.

Four times - once as a dayhike from Portal, once as an overnight from Portal, once from Horseshoe Meadow, and once from the west out of Horse Corral/Marvin Pass.

Speaking from experience, it is a lot easier to plan your second trip after you complete your first trip, so you can become pretty experienced in just a few more trips (with additional insight from the message board). Not everybody here has 50 summits.

As for me, I have summited a total of four times (1994, 1999, 2000, and 2004) via day hikes and have day hiked to Trail Camp a couple of times since then. In 2005, several new members in our group did not like hiking in the summer snowpack, so the rest of us did the right thing and turned around above Trail Camp.

People tend to learn more from mistakes, and there was a lot to be learned when we had group separations on my first three day hikes (with people "who had always wanted to hike Whitney" - a red flag in my book). As I have noted in other posts, my first trip ended with most of our group splitting on the way down while the slow member was having leg cramps going down. The second trip had somebody get airlifted out of Trail Camp after becoming delirious on the upper trail. For my third and fourth trips, I was proactive in providing a lot of straight-talk up front on the hazards of the trail.

Yes, you definitely can learn pretty quickly once you've been up and down on the trail and as you mention, probably even more should you or you group run into difficulties.

I am sure there are some folks who have done it 50+ times here! It seems Whitney brings out the same passion that other peaks like Longs or Rainier do in bringing people back again and again.

For the next trip out, I'll do a few things differently.

Rick Kent has been to Mt. Whitney 22 times, while Bob R. has been there over 100 times. Richard P has been to Mt. Whitney in every month of the year, which is really amazing.

For me, a modest 13 times...9 times with my son Matthew, 3 times with my son Andrew and once with my whole family, together.

For those of us who love the area, Mt Whitney and it's neighboring peaks, offer a chance to get away....to go where we love. Some go to Mt Whitney once and never come back. Others go again and again...not to reach some specific number....just to stand on the top again....and often to share the experience with another.

Three times, twice by the mountaineers route and once on a dayhike up the main trail. The last time was in 1998. The only reason I'd go back into the Whitney zone would be to do Mts Russell and Carrillon. With so many people in that area, it just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

Six, but our group spends a lot of time on the main trail in the winter when going to the summit is not an option, even if it were in our plans.

Twice on the summit for me, the last two years solo dayhike trips up the main trail. The first time I summited was the fourth trip up there, I agree with the people saying you learn a lot from each hike.
I do it for the mental/physical challenge, because it's there, the feeling of accomplishment and I like the views. Peeking over the rocks for the first look at Consultation Lake can't be beat.

I celebrated my 70th Birthday this past Sept by Day Hiking Whitney in 12 1/2 hr. for my fifth Summit. However I like to point out my first summit was in 1949 as a member ob Boy Scout Trop88. A time span of 58 years. Keep up the good work

I've been up 5 times over the past six years. Santa gave me a new knee for a Christmas present so my next trip may or may not be this coming August or September. Each trip has been a real learning experience for me with lots of great memories and pictures.
