Robert, I completely agree with the 60lb packs taking away from the scenery. The first time we hiked part of the JMT, I had a 70+lb pack and was struggling to do 10 miles in a day. I only looked up when I rested.

And although the trip was still amazing, when I compare it to my light weight trips it was aweful. -I still have scars on my shoulders from the heavy pack.

hey Buffy,

forgot to ask you - do you already have transportation arranged from Yosemite back to the Portal? if it would be easier for you, we could do a key swap along the trail, giving you a nice Subaru to drive back down and pick up your car at the Portal. email me at tarbubble at yahoo dot com if you're interested.

aw, shoot. just noticed your Amtrak schedule. ah well, i'll leave this message just in case...

Tarbubble - Too bad your message wasn't 3 weeks earlier...

Anyway, we got a friend to drop us off at Portal on Friday, Aug 15th and then we'll take Amtrak back to LA on Thurs, Aug 28th.

Your offer is very much appreciated though...It's always nice finding cool people on the trail.

Hey, question for you. Did your wife start an entry on Trailjournals.com as emma eyeball's? Just wondering cause they too are carrying their 1 year old son in August. Has to be you guys right?

that's me, tarbubble/emma eyeball. i've been very, very lax about keeping up the journal - busy summer. too bad indeed! i have no idea wht we're going to do about the car, except see if i can get a friend or relative to drive up with me and take the car home. oh well, it's just details, right? wink

tarbubble - Just a suggestion and actually this can be used for any south bound JMTer.

When you arrive to Whitney Portal get to Lone Pine somehow.

From Lone Pine take the CREST BUS to Bishop
departs: 4:20 pm Lone Pine
arrives: 5:20 pm Bishop
Spend the night in Bishop...

The next day you can take the CREST BUS again from Bishop to Mammoth.
departs: 7:00 am Bishop
arrives: 7:50 am Mammoth
Spend a day at Mammoth...

The next day you can take the YARTS BUS from Mammth to Yosemite.
departs: 7:00 am Mammoth
arrives: 11:00 am Yosemite
Pick your car up and go home.

The only problem with this journey is that it'll take you 2 days to get home. This is why we're doing it Northbound, plus ending the trip on top of Half Dome for sunset is also cool.

See you on the trail...
