Got a Call from Kurt Wedberg Last Night...

He was on a borrowed satellite phone. They are doing well. They are stalling for a few days waiting for the Olympic torch to summit and then all systems will be go. He is going back and forth from base camp to camp 1. Camp 2 is all set in place and they will start on camp 3 in a few days. Here is a link that gives periodic updates on their progress; http://www.mountainguides.com/everest-south08.shtml. They hope to attempt the summit the middle of May and he will get home just in time to go to Kilimanjaro in June. If you want to go to Kilimanjaro and hear a bunch of fresh Everest stories, contact the office www.sierramountaineering.com and jump in with Kurt on the June trip. He said “say hello to all my fiends on the message board and tell them I miss them all.”

Kurt should be at C-3 on his summit push. IMG Wishing him a safe climb to the summit and back to BC.

I left Everest Base Camp a few days ago and saw Kurt right before he left base camp for his successful summit attempt.

He wanted me to pass along his warmest regards to all on the Whitney Portal Message Board and wanted to thank everyone for all their support. He was feeling good and in high spirits although he was missing his beloved Sierras.

His plan is to attempt a "two-fer" since he has both an Everest permit and a Lhotse permit. The plan was to hopefully summit Everest first if he could sneak ahead of the massive summit push that was building from all the other teams on the mountain. If successful (which we now know he was) he was to descend to C2, rest for a day or two, and if feeling good would re-ascend to C3, grab a fresh bottle of O's and ascend the fixed lines on Lhotse that some of his friends have put in place for their ascent of Lhotse. The latest IMG reports have him at C2 so we will see if he is still feeling good and able to climb Lhotse as well. Good luck Kurt !!

Wow. What a stud.A two-fer. Amazing. I can't imagine that has been done very many times or ever in such a short period of time for anyone who isn't a sherpa.Kurt you are my hero. Good luck and our prayers are with you.

Kurt is now among the elite of the world climbers who have done two-fers on 8,000-meter peaks. The world's first climbers to do a two-fer were Reinhold Messner and his partner, Hans Kammerlander, back in 1984 when they climbed Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II in the Karakoram. One of our nation's top climbers, Ed Viesturs, whom some of us on this board have personally met and talked with, has done a number of two-fers, and, like Reinhold Messner, he has done them without oxygen (that is, O2 bottles).

Congrats to Kurt for superb climbing!

My previous post stated that his plan was to attempt Lhotse after Everest as he also had a Lhotse permit. I never said he was successful on Lhotse. There has been no word from IMG regarding his Lhotse attempt and no information if he was actually successful or not.

That's awesome..congrats Kurt on a successful ascent. Seems like the climbing season has been a little longer this year there than usual..the weather must be cooperating (?).. Great stuff, can't wait to see the photos.. smile

Be safe the rest of the way..
