In 1924 George Mallory got within 1000' of the summit of Everest (or maybe on top?) with nary a stitch of polyester. But if it had been available ... I bet he would have used it.

You need to experiment with a few items at a time to see what is important to you. Yes, Patagonia is very proud of their capilene, and it's reflected in their price. But to minimize the pain try shopping at rei-outlet, sierra trading post, and good old ebay.

I have found that many of the items you described also work well in hot/humid climates. Those polyester mesh shorts keep me cooler in the summer. So it's a little easier to justify spending the bucks when you will have multiple use of the items.

Personally I could care less about expensive water additives. I use nothing or something simple like crystal light. Others may tell you just the opposite. But the real test is how you adapt to the new materials and equipment. Test a few items as you train and you will get a feel for what works best for you.

Good luck on your climb.
