I'll be playing border collie for some folks from China Lake on Friday. Should be passing through Trail Camp around 3 - 4 PM on the descent. I can give you an up-to-the-moment report; look for an elderly gentleman in a tan Tilley hat.

I won't be taking an ax or crampons, but that's just me.

Those grades are approximate. I took the difference in elevation between 2 points and divided by the distance between them; expressed as a percentage.

Edited in later: Just divided by the miles number, though. Did not bother with converting each mile to 5280 feet.

Thanks for the offer! I will keep a sharp lookout... have seen your "Some Guy" picture as well, so, hopefully, won't miss you if I see you! It would be great to make your acquaintance... the up-to-date info would be a bonus!

We will be a group of 2 men and a woman, and perhaps a second woman as well, in two 2-person tents: one that should say REI Rentals on it, and another a Kelty with light grey-green rainfly. One man (me) is 6 feet, while the other man and woman are both around 5' 10.

BTW, would you have any comments on the red colored portion of the Trip_plan.GIF I posted a few posts earlier?

Thanks!

Crampons worth carrying (next Monday)-for main trail ascent- if switchbacks won't be before 8AM?

Walking time from the summit to Trail Crest is about 1:30, and from Trail Crest to Trail Camp another 1:30. These are fairly leisurely. Add for stops.

But I think you will want to spend more time on the summit than just 15 minutes.

Neel,
I agree with Bob. It usually has taken me about 3 hours to get back to Trail Camp from the summit (except for the time that I missed the "left turn" coming down from the summit). The trail back to Trail Crest can be tough with those uphill stretches.

I do not understand your 13.3% grade to the summit, but 6 hours is a pretty conservative estimate for the trip up.

VersatileFred,

You are correct: the grades were a disaster! Wrong spreadsheet column in formula - my bad. Apologizing to Brent N as well! Fixed now.

I remember the last time I summited I had such a bad time going up it took me 4:30 AM to 10:20 AM to summit. Hopefully, I am in better shape now, but I kept the ascent time unadjusted at 6 hours, just in case.

BobR,

I adjusted the descent times down to 2 hrs per leg instead of 1hr 30, adjusting for our level of performance.

Thank you both for your comments.

Good luck Neel: If you follow your plan, you will be at the summit of Mt. Whitney at 11:00 am Saturday and then on the way down shortly after. We could easily be working the Trail Crest up to Whitney section by then. If you see 4 guys carrying their full packs please say hi.

Mission Mt. Whitney Summit was accomplished. All five of us.

I am now paying for taking Thursday and Friday off by having to answer some 300 emails, so pics will have to wait frown

The following are the salient points:

1. No ice-axes and crampons were required. Did carry them up to Trail Camp, but left them there on the advice of BobR, whom we had the opportunity to meet (and get photographed with smile ) at Trail Camp.

2. The cables are relatively easy. It was exactly as BobR described: "Wall of snow on one side, cables on the other." You can hold both hiking poles in one hand and grab the cable with the free hand most of the way... but as always the second cable from top is too far away from the face of the mountain for most people

3. Plenty of water on switcback 23. "Flowing like a banshee" is what BobR said in one of his posts, I think

4. Take care not to get off the trail while coming up from Mirrror Lake. We realized we were off trail having hiked up a snowfield and then having to come down. From Trailside Meadows I could see another group doing the same thing and tried to wave at them but they weren't looking and I did not have the sun angled right for a mirror. Hope they made it OK

5. There IS snow by Keeler needle. Stay close to the mountain and you should be fine. Guy before me went left while going up and sank twice to his knees in quick succession. Dangerous if you lose your balance. Looked about 1000 feet dangerous... but could be less... wouldn't make a difference

6. We lost the trail briefly coming down in the dark half a mile above Mirror Lake. Found it back with some careful searching, with one scout and 4 people maintaining about 15 yards separation each so as not to lose last few reference points

Thanks to everyone who helped with their posts on this board, and good luck to those needing to read this! Have a good hike!

I'm glad that it worked for you Foxbat2500.

Can't say the same thing about us smile If at Trail Camp Saturday evening you saw a party of five (3 men & 2 women) pack up 3 tents and head down to the Portal at 7:40 PM, that was us!

We made it back to Portal at 1:30 AM Sunday morning!

It was still a lot of fun. Never realized before how pretty the starry night sky can be from Outpost Camp if everyone turns off their headlamps!

Congratulations on your Summit!

Added later: Hey, Foxbat2500! On your Flickr photostream photo IMG_1169: If you draw symmetrical crosshairs centered on the photo center, then, at 100% magnification, you can barely discern 2 of our tents against the rock wall about an inch left of center along the horizontal crosshair! Resolution does not provide any more information if you zoom further.

Hi Neel, we were at the summit from about 11:00 to 11:30 am on Saturday. Lots of people were there.....I checked the register and didn't see your name. What time were you on the summit.

It would have been fun to chat with you on the top of California.

we are planning on passing the cable at 0400 in the mid of july

in the past we had a short sling that we cliped onto the cables as we passed over the icy spots, that was achored to a swiss seat.
are the snow conditions such that this will not work next month?

need opinions.

I'm afraid we were late in starting, Kashcraft. I just checked the time on our register-signing photo (why is it just a notebook these days? Budget cuts? I missed the Inyo county very-respectable volume of old), and that says 12:36 PM.
