BEARS, My son's pack was pulled down hill and torn it up just a little by two small black bears. One big one roamed by early in the evening just mossing around. Yes the bears are out. 6/16/08

Hi Nothing in the car / trunk storage box on top checked all seat storage areas and the center fold storage the ash trays and under all the mats and under the spare tire , no water bottles cups etc. , every car that we see broken into ,it is the I only had!

Some other factors that may set you up for a breakin is where you park, never park where you see glass from a prior breakin and try to park away from the creek parking area and the east side of the overflow parking lot, bears walk up the creek to fish and will hit those cars first and in the overflow lot the bears come up thge slope and search the cars , any smell from the car will attract the bear to take a longer look at times may just open up the window area for a look inside,

So if your car or food is taken that starts the cycle for the bear to return the next trip to that area where they got food.

Thanks Doug

Last year, enroute to Whitney, I camped at Bliss State Park on Lake Tahoe. They had a pretty serious bear problem and the campground host made a point to "spray" everyone's bear box with Pinesol as evening approached. He claims it will hurt the bears' nose and they avoid it.

I have done the same since then (couple of drops on door/trunk) and have had no problems. Of course this is far from scientific ... but ... has anyone else heard of this?

What about "similar type vehicle" such as blue volkswagon bug, or green jeep with or without hard-top? The animal is color blind? But will it factor on the bear imprinting the same/similar shaped (another bug, jeep, etc - no odors, no objects) vehicle in the future? Or is that getting a little paranoid?
Thanks, again.

A quick Google search turned up several articles that credit the Pine Sol deterrent theory. (That stuff sure works on me too. I can't stand to go in the kitchen after my wife uses Pine Sol. Think my wife is on to something?)

Here are a couple of links, including one by the Mamoth Lakes Police Department:
