This may have been posted earlier, but...

Today' Inyo Register (Sept 9, 2008) front page says suspect arrested for the break ins around Bishop Creek, Big Pine/Big Pine Canyon, etc. 2 dozen car windows smashed, etc, etc. Was caught in Lone Pine while lurking around the school with gas tanks. Stolen stuff found, etc.

The "gentleman" was not a local, but from Bay Area.

I suspect with all the gas cans found, he might be on the top of the list for the Bristlecone visitor center fire as well.

Regards, Keith

I'd like to find out what is/was going on in his mind. ...find out what sort of mental state would bring someone to destroy all that property.     It's just bizarre.

Just glad we don't have a hundred people with that mind set across the state. They could cause huge amounts of damage.

...just curious: what is the suspect's name?

On their website I see an article about arrests for grafitti in Bishop but nothing about the trailhead vandalism. Do you have a link to the article?

Removed post and link --- feel ashamed for having made snide comment, now that more is known.

Call me old fashioned, sentimental, or just American, but I would like to see the formality of a fair trial before we fry the guy. I would be happy to join tomcat on the jury, though!

My philosophy concerning arson is make the b@stard build the whole Bristecone Visitor Center back. Maybe next time the pyro feels like burning something he'll remember how long it took to build back!

Hallelujah on the arrest!! Great going law enforcement!!

Wow.

Sad, sad statement. This guy needs help, not jail. And I'm a flaming conservative that thinks that if you weren't guilty, they wouldn't arrest you...

Thanks GregF for the link. One of my coworkers just hiked out this last saturday and hers was the last car at the trailhead with a broken windshield. She was unaware of the whole rash of vehicles that were also hit. I will forward the link to her.

Not really sure if it matters whether he gets helped or fried, just so long as he is off the streets for now. Based in his MySpace page, though, he is a bit wacko.

Glad I don't have to worry about this on Saturday. I hope it was only him. Was he going to burn something else?

Interesting that it might be the same guy...go figure. Let's hope that is not part of some trend from a larger organization.

Either way, provided he is the guilty one - the guy should be put on duty (chaperoned) to clean up every piece of refuse and trash on Sierra trails from Yosemite to Whitney as part of mandatory community service, beginning with the Main Trail. This includes human waste.

Any wages he has or will have should be garnished to compensate those for the damage to their vehicles or property/buildings.

Then...he can be put in that bear canister.

Hi all

Just got back from a jet ski camping trip with Dave (my husband). Steve C was kind enough to send Dave an e-mail that mentioned my brother, John. I had no idea what Steve was talking about so I checked this board and just read that the perpetrator of these horrific acts was my brother, John. I have tears in my eyes as I am typing this. I am in shock. My family and I knew that something was very wrong with John's thinking (started last November). Recently he disowned our family, left his job with our uncle in S.F. and has not been seen at his apartment for 2½ months. He had stated he was "going to the mountains". That's all we knew.

I don't have time to post details right now; will post later tonight. My heart is heavy. I just called my Dad to give him the news; a very difficult phone call.

I am so sorry that John caused these devastating acts of vandalism.

Yes, that is John. In my best estimate, he was alone and not affiliated with any extreme groups.
