The Mt. Whitney trail is a finalist in the "Save the Trails" contest, sponsored by Nature Valley granola bars (scroll down on the page--the Whitney project is the second listing). If Whitney's the winner, Friends of the Inyo will receive a grant to do a trail maintenance project on the 99 switchbacks next year. Please vote for Whitney by Oct 31--then consider volunteering for the trail project next summer!

Do we really want to make it any easier for people to get up there? I am half kidding...but only half.

Of course if Whitney was chosen I would love to help out on that project!

...yes I voted

Thank you, MM. It is simple to vote. Just click on the "Save the Trails" link above, then scroll down to the "Deepest Valley, Highest Mountain" entry (the second one), and click on the green "Vote" picture.

I think our trail has a very good chance of being one of the top vote-selection.

Southswell, the lottery assures that will never happen.

Darn it! I accidently voted. If it was up to me, there would be no trail up Mt. Whitney, and maybe no road up to Whitney Portal. If you want to climb Mt. Whitney, do it from Lone Pine. Instead of a day ascent, it'll probably take a week. Now that would truly be a wilderness experience. smile

Hehe... So true. Up until today, I still have not entered the lottery system or applied for a permit. Good thing I enjoy Mt. Whitney so much more in the winter.

Go all the way -- why not from Death Valley?? Not that far away and then you could truthfully say, "I really did IT ALL". A gent from Holland soloed Mt Everest by riding his bike from the Netherlands all the way to the hill, climbed to the top and then back home. Not a lot can say they did Everest starting at sea level.

Why not claim you did it from the lowest to the highest point and everybody else is a piker. smile

No, no, no. Start from home on bicycle like Goran Kropp. Carry your skis and other gear on a bicycle trailer.

That was Kropp, although he was from Sweden not the Netherlands.

I planned it last year but it didn't work out. Unfortunately I'm not committed enough like the dude from the Netherland to carry all the gear with me for the whole trip. Was planning to do it in three days. The logistic was the crux of the adventure. Will attempt again this year in March.

Check out my itinerary .

The MMWT Lottery and Trail Crest permits are annoyances. Anyone who wants to summit this peak can do so multiple times per year. Just walk in to the IVC most any day and ask for a permit and you will receive one.

The biggest limiting factor these days is the cost of gasoline.

I recall during the Yosemite Planning process (1980?), one alternative was for the removal of all roads in the park. At the time, I thought that was a good idea - imagine WALKING to the rim of the valley and looking down to see nothing but nature.

Strangely, I still feel the same way today - but also feel that (assuming we can't remove the road and trail up Whitney) we should manage the Whitney Trail to allow greater access to the hoards, educating the masses about the value of the true wilderness (beyond Whitney) that they will never make the effort to see.

Shameless bump for a good cause. Please vote for a great trail maintenance project on Whitney. Deadline is Oct 31.

Everyone, this is another reminder...

PLEASE VOTE for our Mt. Whitney trail. Your vote will help get real dollars ($5,000) to pay for supplies that volunteers need to maintain our favorite trail.

I have even received a request from the forest rangers to help get the word out.

The last day to vote is Friday, Oct. 31.

Voting could not be much easier. All you need to do to vote is click here, then scroll down just a tiny bit to the second VOTE button (there are 20), and click.

Thanks so much!

I voted! I also want to encourage anyone who might be interested in doing trail work in the eastern Sierra to take at a look at the website for Friend's of the Inyo. www.friendsoftheinyo.org They are a great organization!

I did a weekend of trail work with them in July this year on the Mount Whitney Main Trail and had a great experience. It felt so good to give back to the mountains that have given me so much pleasure through the years. Here are my pix from the weekend: http://picasaweb.google.com/ryan.norma81/MtWhitneyTrailWork712132008#
