I had the same problem with my home web cam when I upgraded to Vista. The web cam I had didn't have an update driver to work with vista, not sure if yours would... I would contact the manufacturer and see. If not, what worked for me was finding a general webcam driver for windows vista, I still get an error when logging in about needing a device driver but the camera works.

ex3145: Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, there are several types of webcams: there are the type you stick on the computer used for 2-way video conferences, then there are stand-alone cameras that connect to the internet without a computer...

And then there is the type we want: It uses an Olympus camera to take a high-quality picture, a computer to run the camera and manipulate the pictures, and software that enables the computer to interface with the camera.

I have located another site for software: www.SebecTec.com
He uses a better Olympus camera than what we have so far, but his software should run the C-740 UZ.

And the camera arrived today, so I have to get to work trying it out.

Sorry Doug, but I haven't been able to locate any software that will start the fan when the fog gets too thick. wink

Steve so now the how and when can we get the system to the Hostel and wire/ wifi options. I am in SoCal today and have a xp system thats sits doing nothing should I load it up and set it on the third floor and hard wire it to a router also can we shoot a timed picture like planned?

Yesterday I took the old webcam to Canon just like we thought, out of date for repair and after market service would be more than new camera. Thanks

Doug, give me about a week to experiment with the software to get wrinkles ironed out.

I need to decide between Cam2Com and SebecTec software, too.

Both will upload a single picture, but I would like to set up something like www.Tetoncam.com has, where all the prior day's pictures can be accessed.

Go ahead and set up the XP, hard wire would probably be best. I am using Vista, so the setup might be slightly different, but it shouldn't be a big deal.

Once everything is working like I want, I'll box it all up and mail it.

Sent the camera and some software off to Doug yesterday.

Ordered a USB extension cable -- the camera will eventually be put up in the attic of the Hostel.

I have added the larger frame provided by GigaMike around the picture on the home page.

Doug, can you check that XP -- is it XP Home or XP Pro?

Here is an interesting webcam:

http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/avo/webcam/redoubt.jpg

This is looking at a mountain that is fixing to blow up!

Note that Alaska is 1 hour earlier than the West Coast, & being winter has a lot less daylight than we do. So if its black, there is a reason.

At least this time Doug wasn't out running around the mountains while we were huddled around a couple of computers. wink

So do we have any Vista heads out there? My puzzle is this: How can a Vista system (Home Premium) show the one and only user as Administrator, and UAC is "on", but UAC never pops up asking for permission where other Vista systems do?

The camera software is supposed to run "As Administrator", and the computer seems like it is, but the software could not control the camera until we loaded another piece that circumvented the need to run with administrator status.

No no, not at all.  The picture you see in my post above is shrunken down (320x240) on purpose.  There are actually four versions of the webcam picture being uploaded.

1.  A 320x240 numbered in sequence, starting at http://www.whitneyportalstore.com/webcam/whitney_s001.jpg for the first picture of the day, with each picture's name changing from whitney_s001.jpg to whitney_s999.jpg throughout the day.  Then the pictures are renamed to whitney_y001.jpg through whitney_y999.jpg the first time a picture is uploaded the following day.

2.  The one you see on the link I gave, sized at 640x480:
      http://www.whitneyportalstore.com/webcam/wc1.htm

3.  An 800x600 image:
      http://www.whitneyportalstore.com/webcam/whitney_L.jpg

4.  And a full-size picture (2048x1536):
      http://www.whitneyportalstore.com/webcam/whitney.jpg
That full-size picture is too large to view on your browser, so the browser shrinks it down to fit in the window.  If you click on the picture, the browser will enlarge it to full size, and then you have to use the browser's scrollbars to move the view.

Take a look at the pictures this morning! The camera is sitting in the lobby of the Hostel. Thanks to Doug Sr for working on the focus and aim yesterday.

When the camera gets mounted up in the attic, it will be fantastic!

Here is the small version:
