Fred... thanks for coming. It was great to finally meet you!

I shall look forward to seeing you all at the various stores next week. And, of course the Baldy hike on Friday!

Alan I'll be bummed I can't hike with ya. I was hiking with Doogieman in Jepson Bowl Saturday and I threw my back out. I'm out of commission for at least 2 weeks. Maybe next time...

We're going as long as we are still able to drive up the road!

Kurt,

Great show last night at A16 in Oceanside. It was great to see you and catch up. You will probably see me with a couple friends at the Costa Mesa Adventure 16 store on Thursday night.

Have a great next couple of shows!

Hi All,
Just thought I'd give you all a heads up on conditions on Baldy as of Saturday 1-31. We went for a short trip up to the Ski Hut and found that the trail is clear of snow except for one small section, all the way to the hut. Past the hut on the left side of the bowl it looks like snow coverage on the trail all the way to the ridge, although there is one vertical band of snow free terrain that appears to reach the ridge. The snow in the shady area is hard and crusty and resists kick stepping pretty well, while in the sun it softens up enough to get your feet in. A couple of parties we talked to said they made it to the top with no crampons as did a lone climber who said he went straight up the left side of the bowl sans crampons also. Temperature was 37 at Mankers at 0830 and 48-50 at the hut in the shade mid-day. Have a great hike!!

The weather is supposed to get interesting. Here is one forecast for the LA Basin.
Quote:
Winter rains will spend the weekend here

This winter's run of near- record-breaking heat should end Thursday, with the mercury expected to plunge a dramatic 19 degrees as storms sweep across the Southland through Sunday.

Temperatures, which peaked in Los Angeles at 82 degrees Tuesday, should slide to a high of 76 today, then plummet to 63 on Thursday when the first of two storms is expected to hit Los Angeles. One-half to 1 inch of rain should fall by early Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

"Put away the sunblock and pull out the winter umbrella and coats," said Stuart Seto, an NWS weather specialist.

The storms are blowing in from Alaska and will bring snow to area mountains down to 7,000 feet by Thursday afternoon, with more of the white stuff showing at 5,000 feet by Friday - a blustery winter scene that'll look like postcards from back East. A second, stronger storm should roll into the Southland on Friday evening, making Saturday soggy. It's expected to dump another one-half to 1inch of rain on Los Angeles.

There's a 10 percent chance showers will hang around Sunday, though heavy clouds will keep the area in a rainy mood.

The region, where rainfall stands 2.38 inches below normal for this time of year, needs a good soaking.

Since the year's rainfall was measured July 1, only 5 inches has hit the Southland.

"This storm should catch us up a good chunk," Seto said.

So... what's the difference between a "winter umbrella" and, say, a "spring", "summer", or "fall" umbrella??? confused

Does the winter umbrella have extra support in the arms and crampon points at the ribs?

Hmmm... (obviously not enought to do this morning...)

This is LA. A regular umbrella has no function except to keep the sun off of the holder. Perhaps you know it as a parasol. A winter umbrella is actually waterproof, just in case.

Read all about it here.

Carrying and using an umbrella while trekking is quite common in other countries...

I got some strange looks when I hiked up to Trail Camp with one, during an October storm, a number of years ago. If the wind isn't blowing too hard, it makes things quite nice.
