I am visiting LA this coming weekend and am arranging to have Saturday open. Would like to drive in to Lone Pine late Friday night, stay in the Whitney Portal Hostel, and then do a day hike on Saturday. I am looking for a hike where I can practice ice ax arrest, cramponing (sic), and generally do some winter hiking (I'm coming in from Mississippi). I am a frequent reader of this Board, and would love to get some suggestions from the regulars as to a good day hike in the Whitney area. My alternative is to do a hike up Mt. Baldy. I realize that is somewhat off-topic for this Board, but does anyone have any suggestions, advice, or tips as to amount of snow there at this point? Hans

This topic is in NO way off topic for the board. I would think that Thor Peak could meet your needs, if you want to make the trek to LP. The scenery is certainly worth it. Summitpost.com will have some details on it and the route from Lower Boyscout Lake.

It just so happens that I did this route last weekend (scroll down for the report and almost 200 photos of the conditions). I'd recommnend axe and crampons and special care heading up the North Fork to LBSL. One problem: with all the wind that's been blowing, my tracks from last week are almost certainly erased. So, if you're going alone, it'll be a lot of making first tracks.
Thor Peak is right in the center of the Whitney Zone and has some fantastic views.
I'll probably be on the Main Trail side on skis on Saturday. Planning on heading up to at least Consultation Lake. I didn't see any tracks up high on the this side of the mountain, so skis or snowshoes are probably mandatory.

Make good tracks and start early so I can follow! I had the same plan for MT Saturday to try out my AT gear and practice skinning. I just completed a tour in Utah where you connect up all six major ski resorts (Deer Valley, Park City, Solitude, Brighton, Alta, and Snowbird) in a day and am hungry for more. Anyone hitting Utah in the future, I highly recommend booking on the interconnect tour with Ski Utah, it was fantastic.

Now that I know... Ask Mike, Rick, Doug, Moose, Len, Bill, Rick, Tom, Jim, Lisa, etc, etc, etc. I don't break trail when I know someone else will do it for me. A few years back, when I spent nearly three weeks in Park City, I was going to do this tour, but I never got tired of skiing the runs at the resort. I've heard from a number of people that the tour is well worth it.
