I think VersatileFred is correct when he said March Madness may be over before notices are sent out. Nothing yet, negative or positive so I'm guessing that it is a good thing considering it's the last day of March, though I am running out of incense that I'm burning to the mountain gods.

Nothing yet for me. This is driving me nuts as I'm not a patient person! wink

Haven't received anything here in SF yet either. I just want to know already as I have other plans to make that will revolve around whether I get a permit or not.

I called the wilderness office this morning and just got a recording. Sounds like notices (both yea and nea) are being sent out daily, but also that they have started processing credit card charges.

The recording asked that calls regarding questions on the lottery not be made until after the 15th.

I've been checking my CC account on line a couple times a day now, so far... nothing. This not knowing is the pits, but at this point, I guess it's better than getting a "regrets" letter.

If they are done processing all applications and already have their set reservations, why don't they update by now the Availability Calendar on their website?

Repeating what I wrote last Friday, with a clarification below:

Quote:
YES, finally, at 10:00 am today, March 27, we reached the bottom of the lottery box.
6023 applications were sent to the 2009 Mt Whitney lottery
3638 reservations / 2043 unsuccessful
The charging of credit cards, and successful mail will begin this next week.

Lots of people have been calling with concerns about charge cards that had to be canceled.  We will not disqualify someone for a declined charge card transaction.  When we find a card number that is declined, we will call the person and ask for updated charge card information.

It will take more than a week to get all the letters out.  I will write again when the last of the mail is sent.

The calendar with dates that have space still available should be updated in early April.

Cheers

I inquired about the "unsuccessful" notices, and received the reply that they "hope to get them in the mail this week."

So by next week, maybe Wednesday, if you haven't received a "so sorry" notice, then you most likely have a reservation.

Because it is a big job and it takes time!  Please have patience.

Thanks for the update. Is that a record number of applications?
So no news is good news, hopefully

They've started processing the credit cards. (I am pleased to say that I know this from checking mine on line.)

Good luck to all!

Just checked my CC statement online and Cha-Ching! Looks like my first ever application was accepted! I suppose we have to wait for the notices to be mailed to find out which day was accepted?

Good luck everyone else!

I knew I should have wrote down a cc number and not have provided a check! LOL Its coming down to a point where I'm checking my account every 2 hours to see if that check has cleared!

Clearly, it takes time. Any thinking person should be able to figure that out. The Inyo NF website clearly states, please DO NOT CALL about the lottery. I actually tried to call about another trail, yes, believe it or not, another trail in the Sierra, go figure. The recording says "due to the large number of calls...call back after this weekend." Great, I have to wait...

Obviously, they are putting every person available on the job getting the lottery done. You'll have to wait just like the lottery hopefuls.

They have a limited staff (all those pesky budget cuts) and I am sure they are doing their best to get all the lottery requests processed.

Understood. I received a call today from John in the office about another permit issue and he said to call back. I did and got the message and thought the office was inundated with lottery calls which prompted the "do not call until later." Thanks for the response.

Correction, my conformation is for Aug 30th and also, I successfully made reservations for campsites at the Whitney Portal.

Good Luck to everybody!

I had the same problem. Talked with someone yesterday and then called her back today, but I got the recording. Too many people calling about permit status I guess.

Got my denial letter yesterday. Oh well, there's always plan B - walk in and ask. Just was hoping to get the date nailed down because of that whole requesting time off from work thing.

There's a solution, of course, perhaps too obvious to mention: just quit your job, so you can focus fully on the mountain.
