Been reading the threads and decided to add my thoughts. I have to agree with Gary that certain things just do not mix.
I recently went rock climbing with an established organization only to watch the leaders getting drunk and high the night before the climb. Obviously I did not maintain any association with the club and it was a major disappointment.
Simply put, I believe that situations where judgment and performance are of absolute necessity, alcohol and drugs do not belong.
Realizing that others have different views my final statement would be to ensure the members on YOUR team have the same view on the subject. It is only respectful to the other team members.
It's just better in the mountains

Ken -- You have really complicated things! On the one hand, someone had to empty all of those wine bottles. On the other hand, the main character was certainly not in a performance-impaired state. so, everyone should be happy!

I've been following this topic for a while and the original question was basically "was it ok to have a swirl or two in the back country" Well that got "morphed" into this "doing drugs and consuming lots of alcohol topic. I think we all would agree thats probably not a good thing. But to answer to the orginal question ......Yes I think it is ok to have a "SWIRL or two"...Shame on you for twisting this into some drug alcohol induced affair. To each is own. I respect people who dont drink. I don't drink for several months out of the year. I plan on having a shot of 1849 Tequila about a $150 bottle of teq on top of Whitney on Tuesday. No mas Tequila por favor!!!!!
Thats is until I get to my tent...Then I will probably will have a couple more. YEEEEEEEE!

what ever you decide to do , please bring it in somthing other than a bottle. Looking through these posts and pics , I cant think of a dumber thing to do that carry the weight of a bottle and risk breaking it and the resulting glass. There seems to be no end in the glass left by others in spots tucked away and in the open.
Come August we will be drinking tequila at trail camp under the falling stars, out of a unbreakable contanier.
WC fields said it best, someone who does not drink feels the best they ever will when they wake up, I prefer to rally as the day progress's

So...that's why you are such a strong hiker and climber. No, not the booze you ingest, but the physical conditioning you receive from carrying cases of French hooch up into the high country. Your secret is out!

I do extended solo self-contained trips - 2 + weeks - into the backcountry so have to micro-manage every ounce; no booze or unneeded treats. While the mostly freeze dried diet is ok, ususally about day 9 I start hallucinating about pizza and beer. Always ensure that I have a couple beers in the back of the truck for my reentry into civilization. No beer is as good as cracking that first one open upon dropping the pack for the final time after 16+ days in the wilderness. Even in summer, the brew stays cold at the Horseshoe Meadows parking lot; stays warm at the Shepherd Trailhead, but one must accept some hardships!

Hey Now!
There was a guy who was handing out beers on top of Muir pass. He must of had 4 cases. As we passed through the guy with this great smile asked if i would like a "COLD ONE" I had never seen such a thing with the exception of the "watermelon man" who offered watermelon slices on top of Piute pass. This guy had bad knees so .... to get a work out he would hoist a watermelon up the pass and slice and dice and walk down with less stress on his body and STOKE people on top. He collected the remains. I have to admit that was the best watermelon I have ever had.
What a great SURPRISE!...Both of them.
I have a picture of the watermelon man somewhere. When I can find it I will post it.

Sierra Gator and I helped a group on the summit of Whitney. It was later in the day and not many people up there. One of the guys was celebrating his 60th birthday on the summit and his friends broke out a bottle of champagne. We all had a small sippy cup full and enjoyed the moment. I could tell the difference while climbing Mt. Muir.
