A friend and I are hiking Mount Whitney June 9-11 with two overnights. This is our first time and I was wondering if any of the more experienced hikers had any advice for us? Important things to bring, food, clothes, ice picks/crampons? Also, is there a need for a tent at trail camp? I see that some people bring one and others don't.

Amanda, were you on Baldy yesterday May 31st with your friend? Just curious I talked to two people from OC that were training for Baldy. Have fun on Whitney if it's your first time bring allot of snacks some people lose their appetite when they camp at elevation. Stuff like animal cookies, crackers, salted almonds, etc....have fun and be safe...

The one thing predictable about the Sierra weather is its unpredictability. I have been rained on when there was no rain in the forecast too many times to count.

Take a tent. Take foods that you absolute love at sea level.

Since you called an ice axe an ice pick, I will caution you about going higher than your skill level allows...remember the up usually doesn't get'cha; the down does.
