Tried out some great trail meals this time out.

http://hawkvittles.com/

He's a backpacker & retired chef. I can't attest to all meals, but IMHO the stews ROCK and breakfasts are killer. Huge portions, unlike some of the meals that list as portion for 2 (2 not very hungry people?) These are 2 generous hungry person servings. Not at all cardboard tasting. Tell him your from the Whitney forum. grin

I also smoke my own almonds (in a smoker - and I only add kosher salt) and bring a dry salami. If I have room I always dream of shoving a Schatts pastry in my bear can (giggle) Great trail food.

Carole, what a great idea! How long do you smoke them?

I put them in a large tupperware container with about 2 tbsp of filtered water.
Shake to coat -
add salt about 1/3 cup *I do a mix of kosher & seasalt
shake some more -
put on a sheet & into the smoker they go.

It varies..usually about 1/2 - 3/4 hour
variables are:
amount of smoke & heat
how constant the heat is

the nuts need to have a slight snap to them when they come out (don't worry, they will get crunchier as they cool)

If I pass the test - hiking with SoCal girl, I may be up on the ladies only hike. I'll bring a mess of them on that trip.

cheers!!

Hi 2dtrail!

I'm sure you'll love it when you get it. Hawk is on his annual backpack trip which goes from June 6-25th. I'm sure he will send it out to you as soon as he gets back, but I didn't want you to wonder where your jerky was.

Cheers

Thanks so much for the idea, Carole! I smoked some yesterday and they turned out SOOO good! WAY better than the comercial smoked almonds (IMHO). I didn't have Kosher salt so I only used fine sea salt.... I ended up leaving them in the smoker for a few hours - we were smoking some meat as well. I definitely will be adding these to my list of favorite foods!
