Hi For the new members that are not aware of Jack and Betsy the Whitney story is long, Betsy stayed in one of the cabins when she was young 9-10 years old and hiked Whitney with her family, many years later married she returned with her husband and hiked Whitney again, this was the start of a mission for Jack some how he heard about Bob R. and others that have over a hundred summits and Jack thgought he would like to see if he could reach 100 summits by some age? Well he is at 78-79 summits now Betsy is near 50 summits and both have done the Mountaineers Route many times as well as trips around the back from Cottonwood.

The real story is they live in San Diego Jack is a roofing Contractor and Betsy has a position with a small College in Point Loma , they are just like you !!!! They have thousands of photos of the Whitney area and Betsy knows ALL the flowers if not see will.

They did a talk at A-16 last winter and many were able to go , the talks are from a couple that has lives simlar to yours and nothing to gain except share stories and answer question, about Whitney and the area.

Jack and Betsy are at Whitney now and will return next week with fresh stories and photos ,they will do two talks at A-16

First will be at the Oceanside Store July 15, 7 :00 PM

The second will be in LA JULY 18, 10 AM at the WEST LA A-16 STORE .

These talks will give you fresh first hand information about the trail ,weather and answer any last minute questions you may have about your upcoming trip. If you are not planning a trip this year or ever still think about going and just seeing how life can lead one down a different path .

Ok so no one ask Jack about the rock at the last talk or Betsy about the mile 6 marker ,this is your chance to get the answers.

If you are in the Sierra on Saturday night at the Eastern Sierra Museum in Independence a talk about Norman Clyde and his photos will be held plus Glen Dawson is to talk about the first climb up the east face of Whitney. Mr Dawson is 93 it would be an honor for anyone to hear this person speak of the Sierra.

Please fit the talks into your trip planning Thanks Doug

This is great news. Turns out, on the afternoon of the 18th, Sheila and I have tickets for the ballet at the Dorothy Chandler. So we'll just leave home a little early, and sit in on Jack and Betsy. On Sunday we'll spend the day at the Getty Villa, so it will be a grand weekend.

Looking forward to getting some tips from Jack, and finding out from Betsy where Mile Marker 6 is. (I think it's in the same place as 1 and 2.)

I can't wait to hike with Bets tomorrow. I'm bringing my flower book for sure. Jack is a hero of mine, for sure, along with Bear.

The Saturday night talk sounds perfect, and on the way home even!

Our team made a successful one day trek to the top of Whitney yesterday. Thanks to Betsy for giving us the info regarding the trail the day before (snow conditions at the cables, etc) and to Doug for his continuing encouragement and for the excellent information in his book Mount Whitney, Mountain Lore From The Whitney Store...GREAT book. Doug, thanks for the words of encouragement you wrote in my copy of the book....recommend you get your book stocked in the Whitney Portal store as well as the Hostel for all to enjoy...Thanks again.

Doug,

Are you saying that Glen Dawson was at the museum Saturday July 11...or will he be there Saturday July 18?

Hearing him speak is a once in this lifetime experience!

Thanks, Susan.

Glen Dawson was there this past Saturday night, and I believe the next show (in SoCal) is going to be presented at his home. He looked in wonderful shape (a lot better than most of the patients I see who are his age!), and he didn't really speak so much as to answer questions. But to be present with a living legend was indeed amazing!

Hubby and I attended WLA clinic on Sat. Excellent, useful info. Jack and Betsy are so nice! It was a pleasure meeting them and BobR too. Hope to meet up again sometime, possibly on the trail or one of my "renewal" jaunts up 395.
