I'm home, got kicked off the mountain at 11PM last night. Was trying to sleep in my car at the overflow lot when fire engines and police cars came screaming up starting at 10PM Code 3, so much for sleep! Thought it was an ambulance for one of the Badwater runners who dribbled in all night. Those people are AWESOME!!!!!!

Was half dressed when police car lighted up my car, cop banging on my window, get up, get out immediately!! Said a fire was on the way, could smell it, saw no flames or glow. The Badwater runners were being turned back or held, hope they made the finish line. Whitney Ranger station said Portal Road closed until 7AM today. Possibly Portal itself closed due to many fire vehicles stationed up there.

Tried to cancel my one-day permit for today, Lone Pine Rangers said call Bishop station, couldn't get through.

Anyone know where the fire originated? Or what is going on at this time?

Heard about this on the radio this morning, and a patient had been listening to the scanner. REALLY glad to hear everything/one is ok.

Also very glad to hear all is well and that the situation has been resolved.

Any confirmed details? Location? Cause? Extent of damage? Any impact on area facilities?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear about the evacuation. Hope you will have another opportunity to hit the Whitney Trail. I went up at 3:00 a.m. on the 14th. Thankfully, made it to the top and back. An indescribably beautiful hike. Got good advice from Captain Jack and Doug Sr. Thanks for everything.
