Andrea's toe nails were not long like long fingernails. I believe this may be an issue for quite a few women hikers. Personally, I was not aware that my toe nails would get bruised and fall off, and I bet quite a few others have had this problem. If I can help just one lady preserve her pedi, I've done my good deed for the day.... smile

Christine, PM me and we can discuss your transportation needs.
I have a solo tent you may use...it doesn't weigh much. Only a couple of pounds.

Might actually be more of an issue with her boots. I've had many a pedi (like THAT play on words???) that are not disturbed because my boots fit perfectly. I've also lost a nail or two due to the boots NOT fitting.

I don't get ouit there as much as you guys do... but (knock on wood) I've never lost a toenail...

My boots fit really well though and there's some nice room in the toebox (up and downhill)...

L.L. Bean Cresta Gortex Hikers -- they come in Widths and have a huge toebox. Tons of reviews; 5 Star rating (including me)

Definately want to compare boots w/you, Laura. I recall we have the same shoe size, hard to find - tall women just get the short shrift. This is a v. important topic. Andrea had Merrell trail runners, I think...according to her they fit nicely. Let me see what I can do about finding a Sherpa that also gives good foot massages smile

I am 5'7" and wear a narrow boot, so I can relate to the "hard to fit" category (the Cresta is one of the few boots that come in Narrow sizing)

I think it may have to do with the Merrells. I have a pair and if I don't tape my toes then I will get blisters under my toe nails. They fit great and fell great on the foot other then that. I will be trying out the new boots this weekend to see if I have the same problem. The new ones have more room in the toes. I am hoping they are good.. grin

Hi peeps;
just got back from NC. hot hot hot - bugs bugs bugs.
so glad to be home. Twisted my ankle the day before I left so I'll be really slow on the trail. sorry ava, you won't have me breathing (choking) beside you as we run the trail. I"m going to try Iron maybe tomorrow to test its trail worthiness.

That's the last time I try to pull a "Bo Derek". crazy As I was bounding into the waves I hit a sand hole. threw me to the ground and then was beat up by a bunch of waves as I clutched my injury. So NOT graceful - and all my family laughed their bum off until someone decided that maybe they should see if I was ok.

What sort of shirts are you wearing during all of this feasting? I wear those sun-protective long sleeved shirts from REI (Sahara)and I have found that the tight weave of the material keeps the buggers out (except around the wrists). I have found that those zip-off pants work well, too. (it saves on both the sun screen and the bug juice...and it keeps the smell of the concoction of both outta my sleeping bag)

Chris.... I will be at Carole's house. That is if she doesn't bail on us. We are going to do Iron Mt. on Wednesday evening to see how she does and she is doing some pin poking today. Carole's house is closer so I will just meet you there. If she doesn't end up going then I will get your addy and meet you there. grin

I'm putting the final touches on my Golite tent & Nikwaxing the base to make it more water-resistant than it currently is. I think I've got most of my food worked out, now I have to get the scotch. I picked up some platypus wine bags so I don't have to schlep bottles. I walked a couple miles this morning just to get it moving and I'll do it again tonight. tomorrow I'll do my normal workout w/ my trainer & Iron in the evening with Ava.

Iron with the backpack on will be the telling trek. I've (read; my hubby) have been slathering my ankle & foot in Chinese herbs & plasters. it feels better, but now its orange. I'll trade orange for pain anyday.

If I don't hike, I'm still going up with you and camping in my big-butted REI kingdom6 (unless Ava insists on the RV) (I'll just caravan behind you guys & we'll chat via my walkie talkies). Then I'll tottle over to the beerfest in Mammoth. I'll meet you afterwards to trade tales & tell you about the great beer.

Unless....

What ever happened with that sherpa?
Blooty - you can round up a marine or two, can't you? smile

Well the weather looks like highs of 60 and lows of 40 with thundershowers. Cool it won't be to hot.

As for the RV, Could bring if everyone wants but here are few draw backs. Need campground for 3 nights and we won't have a car to go to eat dinner that night. Unless I tow the jeep. If you ended up staying at camp then the RV would be great for you.
So if you don't think the ankle will make the whole hike I can defiantly bring the RV so you can hang..

Chris... Do you have the number of the campground so I can call to see if they can fit a 30 ft RV.

Carole.. I think I will bring a one man tent just in case you don't make it that way I have one. We were going to share but I just want to be prepared in case we don't.

I'll be going over my food tonight and getting that all set. The good thing about this hike is I can lose a few lbs..Sweat. wink

Coming down to the wire, guess I better tidy up the Moose Lodge so we can see the floor again. Putting gear away actually helps.

Weather up high this weekend was a complete mish-mosh, but the underlying, consistent trend was WARM. I didn't get an accurate temp reading since I was using my pack as a pillow, but I was really warm in my 40deg bag, had on light pants, light long-sleeve top, and mid-weight fleece jacket. The humidity was also an issue this weekend: Chris, the new tent only breathes well, even when guylined out tight, when there is air movements. Plenty of condensation (not raining in the tent, but wet) in the mornings making bags a little wet. I may end up with my Big Agnes this weekend instead, depending on the weather. We caught some beautiful weather windows with clouds and breezes but no rain (it came in behind us on the way out Sunday).

I will do some more research on the peaks surrounding the basin in the next day or so (TR and pics first, cleaning the Moose Lodge second), but I believe they can all be reached via Class 2 routes.

Just remember, try to be efficient with your gear. Carole, I hope your ankle is feeling up to the task, but take it easy, lots of ice!
