Just a reminder that White Mtn/Barcroft Lab holding Open House on Sun. Aug 2. For newbies, a great place to get extreme altitude exposure and bag your first 14'r.

Also, does anyone know the status of the burned museum/gift shop at the Bristlecone Park? Will it be rebuilt, or will California's sucky economy put the kabosh on that one? Like to know.

Blooty, do you need a ride to White Mountain this year? You can park the Vet in the same place.

and on the subject of getting to White Mountain...

can anyone advise me on whether it's foolish to think about driving a regular passenger car on Silver Canyon Road (straight east from Bishop), rather than taking the slightly longer route of going south from Bishop on 395 and then east on 168 / north on White Mtn. Road?

thanks!

Silver Canyon road is strictly 4wd. A friend of mine took his 4WD pickup up early June, and said never again, that it was a boulder-strewn mess.

Hi Sherry, this was a real fun day last year. Check your PM
I appreciate your offer for a ride smile
I don't think we're going to see another building up there for a while...A shame all the way around. I know they had some fundraisers last year but haven't heard anything more. Check with Friends of the Inyo.

Maybe I'm missing something here but wasn't the now defunct Schulman Grove Visitor Center located on federal propery aka Inyo National Forest? Where do California State Park lands enter the equation?

From the Inyo National Forest webpage:
"...plans have been completed and work has begun on the replacement of the destroyed exterior features at the visitor center including the boardwalk, the outside exhibits, and the patio, all of which are expected to be completed by late June. A portable temporary visitor center building will be moved into place for this summer season and will include an exhibit area, bookstore, and a small theatre room."
For additional information on this project, please contact John Louth at 760-873-2514.
"

We were up at Schulman on Memorial weekend and there was definately some major construction going on.

Moved to Bishop in 2012 and haven't looked back since...

We'd planned to go this year and were really looking forward to seeing everyone from WPSMB again. But unfortunately, I just got smacked down with acute bronchitis and low potassium. : (

So I will be home lying in bed and waiting to read the reports!

Have fun out there, and stay safe!

Friends of the Inyo will be leading a hike on the Methuselah trail (4.5 miles) this Sunday morning--should leave plenty of time to go up to the research station and tour around afterwards.
Hike leaves from Schulman Grove at 9a.m.
