I'm planning to climb high and sleep low! I'll be climbing a mountain the Cherokee Indians named Tanamha a few hundred years ago. Apparently the mountain used to be higher than Mt. Everest--going back about 250 million years ago. But, as you are probably guessing, it is a bit lower now. Even lower than Mt. Whitney. But, hey, what is a Californian going to do out here in the Appalachian Mountains? Back in 1794, French botanist Andre Michaux climbed Tanamha and recorded in his journal that he "Reached the summit of the highest mountain in all of North America...." So, this weekend I will be taking what is labelled as a "strenuous" trail, using ladders and cables, to reach the soaring height of 5,946 feet. Tenamha has since been renamed Calloway Mountain, which is the highest peak of Grandfather Mountain. Hey, the peak soars about 2,000 feet over the valley below, which is about as close as I can come to the walls of Yosemite soaring 3,000 to 4,000 feet over Yosemite Valley.
I hope everyone can climb a mountain...and have a great time doing it!
